A buddy of mine always jokes about how much he likes watching Cops, you know the Saturday night show with the annoying theme song: Bad Boys, Bad Boys whacha gonna do. You're welcome for putting the song in your head. So I got to thinking, how is it possible that Cops is still on the air? For those that don't know, Cops is currently in it's 23rd season. 23rd!?!?!? I've recently discovered a website where the official ratings are released and discussed by fellow tv nerds like myself. So I decided to look into Saturday nights and see how many people actually watch white trash america get their heads smashed in by the local police department. I was stunned to read that almost 4.5 million people watch every Saturday night! 4.5! Glee last week got 12 million and that's a mega-hit! I will admit, it's a Saturday night and typically people aren't watching television. If they are, they're catching up on the weeks shows to clear room on their pvr, or so I've heard. But that's a crazy number. The time-slots are basically throw aways and there isn't really anything else to put in there. But I'm stunned to see that 4.5 million actually watch COPS.
Cops Saturday night partner America's Most Wanted averages about 5 million viewers on a Saturday night. While I can see why people watch AMW because it actually provides society a service and actually does some good by catching bad guys. I was still surprised by the number.
