Last Night in the Media Room
I was browsing the Internet on Tuesday, I was visiting one of my favorite sites givememyremote and they've got a cool idea where they list what they watched the night before and write about it. I thought it was a cool idea so I thought I'd use it.
So, I welcome you to Last Night in the Media Room.
So I begin my evening with watching the second episode of Suburgatory. This show has been getting much love from bloggers and all over Twitter. I watched the pilot a couple weeks ago and I hated it. I was very confused by the love so I decided to pvr last weeks second episode and watch it. Again I didn't like it, the big issue I've got is I don't like any of the scenes at the high school or with the high school students. The stuff with the adults is quite funny and the scenes between daughter and father are good enough. But this isn't enough to keep me watching. Again, what suburbs are these?
Next up was my daily dose of PTI. If you're a sports fan, this is a great show for you. The two hosts debate issues over a minute to a minute and a half each. It keeps me up to date on the latest happenings in the sports world.
Then I started the pilot for American Horror Story, it seems that it just wants to be creepy for creepy sake. Early in the pilot there is a scene with Connie Britton who's in the kitchen and something spooky is happening in their current home. The camera keeps jumping to different angles off the same scene and it gets highly annoying. It doesn't make the scene any more creepy or create tension, it just creates a headache. I can't help but feel that Jessica Lange's character is actually dead, but she just doesn't know it yet. I didn't get much further than this because Mrs. Media Room came home and I may or may not have gotten in trouble. We've just finished watching all 5 Seasons of Friday Night Lights, so apparently watching this was high on her list. So I shut it down. The 15 minutes I did see, I wasn't overly impressed with. But I'm really hoping it gets better.
Next up was Castle. We continue on with the 3XKiller story from last season. The story centers around Detective Ryan for a major reason in this episode. The actor, Seamus Dever, has never been as good as he was in this episode. Have I mentioned how much I hate the characters Penny Johnson plays? I couldn't hate her character anymore in 24 and I'm really starting to hate her character in this. Great actress. I really like when shows are able to continue on a story across several seasons. This story is quite deep and really more serious than the typical Castle fare, which is a nice switch for the often goofy series. What I'm really getting pissed with is the fact that the whole story with Beckett has really disappeared. She was a mess in the first episode and attends two therapy sessions. In the second session she reveals that she remembers everything from the shooting of last season. she remembers everything from that afternoon, like the three words whispered to her from Castle. Since that moment we've got nothing on that story. I just don't see how we can go from something as huge as that to absolutely nothing. It's stuff like this drives tv fans NUTS! Sure she's flirting with him quite a bit and she's told him that she can't be with anyone until she solves the murder of her mother. Is that the closure of her big reveal for now?
We were then going to watch House, very excited to see the big reveal of the new head of the Hospital. But alas, the baseball game messed with my taping and I didn't get it. We'll have to grab that one on demand another night.
Let's go with Terra Nova next, if you've been here before, you know my feelings on this one. I want to like it, but gosh darn it if the producers are trying their hardest to not allow that to happen. So we did what some will say Lost did best, a storyline involving a hatch. So they can't say hatch without sounding totally Lostish, so we'll go with "Outpost" Hmmm, Lost. I'm sure I'll come back to that thought later. So there is a mysterious disease and the doctor has to go and see what's up at the hatch. Ya, I loved Lost so we'll now just refer to it as a hatch. Oh look, the doctor is now sick, I only knew that with the brilliant, "Who's Zoey" line. Got it, thanks. I'm sorry if I'm being overly harsh, but this show just really bugs me. Ohhhh, a mention of the calculations by the falls. Yes! Oh. Just a reminder that the writers haven't forgotten that storyline. You know what? I haven't either, because that's the most interesting thing you've shown us so far in this show. Just saw a trailer for Tower Heist during the break, holy crap does that look awful or is that just me? Back to the show. You can talk to the future, like 85 million years into the future? Hmmm, this could be interesting. Maybe. The writers just might kill my interest in that mystery as well, like they have with so many they've already introduced. Woah, what? Did I hear that Taylor's son was taken in 2135 in Somalia? How's that possible? I thought his son was in Terra Nova? What's up with this? Two sons I guess is the simplest explanation to this, the reason why the space pirate son is so angry at dear ol' dad? Or the dad got him back and the son is still pissed and became a space pirate. So the countdown is on before the disease takes over, but we've got lots of time to discuss our current relationship and to make out? I thought you were in a hurry? Seems a bit too forced to me. I don't even really see the whole point to it, do you need her to remember that she's your wife? Sure your ego is a bit bruised by the other doctor, but really? HOW DOES THIS HELP THE PLOT? This show is trying to introduce mysteries and tension to the story. The problem is, I don't find either all that interesting and I can't grow attached to them because they seem predictable. So now we've got space pirates(Others), a Hatch and a leader that's mysterious and appears to have his own agenda.(But not as good as Ben was at that game). I felt like I was watching a bad episode of Lost and this show is nowhere at the writing level that Lost was. I can't help but wonder, just how involved is Steven Spielberg in this?
Ok, now I'm good and pissed at a show. Let's lighten the mood with some Rick Mercer Report. Loved the joke about Gary Bettman interested in Carriage Racing so he can ruin that too. So we start off with what looks like a total blast, trailer racing. So off to Brighton Ontario to "trailer race", pretty much demolition derby with trailers. You tow any kind of trailer you want and you try to destroy your opponents trailer while driving around a circular track. Woah, that looks fun. Then we did some carriage off-road racing, Rick did look to be having some serious fun as always. Does a Canadian have a better "job" than Rick Mercer? I think not.
A clip of trailer racing:
And a lamer version of the Carriage racing.
Ok, so we're going to start up American Horror Story again so Mrs. Media Room can enjoy "the fun" from the start. Didn't notice the first time, but how come the dog wasn't barking when Jessice Lange and her daughter were in the house? That's weird, isn't it? Speaking of weird. That's only just starting. Wow. I'm having a real hard time with hearing Coach's wife swear like that, the Tami Taylor I know wouldn't be using language like that. Oh my. As soon as the doc's patient walked into the room, the first thing I seriously thought was. That's a very Kurt Cobain-like cardigan, then we before I know it, there is a Nirvana shout out. Predictable. This show is far from predictable and that's the problem. It's really trying to force the creepiness down your throat.
- Creepy House. Check.
- Creepy Kids. Check.
- Ghosts. Check.
- Creepy camera techniques. Check.
- Creepy flashes of images. Check.
- Creepy Neighbor that knows more than what she's saying. Check.
- Creepy dude that knows the history of the house/hotel. Whatever. Check.
- Demons. Check.
- Gruesome Murders. Check.
- Several Murders have occurred in said creepy house. Check.
- Characters being controlled and don't know what they're doing. Check.
- Flashing lights out of nowhere so you really can't tell what you're watching. Check.
- Mom character appears to be pregnant with possible devil spawn inside her. Check.
As you can see, this show is trying to cover every horror cliche known to man and can't decide what kind of show it wants to be.
That's it for me, time for some sleep.
