Emmy Nominations

I sit here on the deck at the cottage watching my Twitter feed explode with the announcement of the Emmy Nominations fly on by. It really is difficult to try and keep up with 40 tweets a minute. It's part of the fun really. So let's look at the list and see what we've got here.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
Mad Men

Thoughts from the Media Room: This was a tough call between Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones for me. Each week Thrones just got that much better than the week before. I thought Dexter wasn't that great this year, except for the last couple of episodes. I could also see it going to Friday Night Lights as the series is now finished.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Kathy Bates, Harry’s Law
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Mireille Enos, The Killing
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men

Thoughts from the Media Room: I enjoy Harry's Law, but I don't think she deserves an Emmy for it. Enos is fantastic in The Killing, say what you will about the Series or the Producer of it. You can't deny that week in and week out Enos brought it.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Timothy Olyphant, Justified

Thoughts from the Media Room: Without Buscemi there is no Boardwalk Empire. It's truly that simple.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Walton Goggins, Justified
John Slattery, Mad Men
Andrew Braugher, Men of a Certain Age

Thoughts from the Media Room: This was an easy one for me, so many people come up to me and ask, hey man, you watching Game of Thrones? Well, duh, of course I am. The first thing they say in response is, "Isn't the imp great!"

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
Margo Martindale, Justified
Michelle Forbes, The Killing
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

Thoughts from the Media Room: I talked about how fantastic Forbes is in this role. She rips your heart right out of your chest and you want her to have it because she is just so broken from the tragedy that has ripped her family apart.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Bruce Dern, Big Love
Beau Bridges, Brothers & Sisters
Michael J. Fox, The Good Wife
Paul McCrane, Harry’s Law
Jeremy Davies, Justified
Robert Morse, Mad Men

Thoughts from the Media Room: I got nothing for this one. Nothing really jumps out at me for this.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Mary McDonnell, The Closer
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Loretta Devine, Grey’s Anatomy
Randee Heller, Man Men
Cara Buono, Mad Men
Joan Cusack, Shameless
Alfre Woodard, True Blood

Thoughts from the Media Room: Holy crap, does Joan does crazy or what! I was quite surprised by the Stiles nomination as most people would put her at the top of their lists of things they hated about this past season for Dexter.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY
The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
Parks and Recreation
30 Rock

Thoughts from the Media Room: Easy one here for me. Big Bang brings it most weeks and has me laughing the hardest, without question. Glee, yikes I thought this season was highly inconsistent and missed a few weeks because I just couldn't take it. Modern Family I thought was very un-even and nowhere near as good as the first season. THe Office, I stopped enjoying you a few years back. Parks and Recreation has been quite good as well, just not as consistent as Big Bang for me. 30 Rock? I'm done with you as well. Sorry. You lost me last season.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Thoughts from the Media Room: Apparently Laura Linney has never lost after being nominated for an Emmy. I'm still going for Plimpton. Goonies NEVER DIE!!

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Louis C.K., Louie
Steve Carell, The Office
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Thoughts from the Media Room: While Baldwin is the best thing about 30 Rock these days, I still have to give it Jim Parsons. How can you NOT give it to Sheldon? Seriously.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Chris Colfer, Glee
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men

Thoughts from the Media Room: Holy stacked category Batman. Jon Cryer, seriously? Ty Burrell is the reason to watch Modern Family, he reminds me of myself and you just are on the edge of your seat just waiting to see what wacky thing that he comes up with next.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Jane Lynch, Glee
Betty White, Hot In Cleveland
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock

Thoughts from the Media Room: Vergara brings the funny each week and I'm not always sure she realizes how funny she is.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Idris Elba, The Big C
Nathan Lane, Modern Family
Zach Galifianakis, Saturday Night Live
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live
Matt Damon, 30 Rock
Will Arnett, 30 Rock

Thoughts from the Media Room: The Timberlake episode was the best episode of the season and while that's not saying much. He really does need to join the cast full-time.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Kristin Chenoweth, Glee
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Gwyneth Paltrow, Glee
Cloris Leachman, Raising Hope
Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live
Elizabeth Banks, 30 Rock

Thoughts from the Media Room: How many times did Jones have you in near tears or just full on tears this past season.

OUTSTANDING REALITY SHOW HOST
Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars
Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance
Jeff Probst, Survivor

Thoughts from the Media Room: I just love when Phil gives "The Rock" eyebrow to someone when they say something wacky and the checkpoint. That alone is worth an Emmy to me.

OUTSTANDING REALITY SHOW COMPETITION
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing With the Stars
Project Runway
So You Think You Can Dance
Top Chef

Thoughts from the Media Room: Say what you will about AI, I thought this years top 10 of talent was the best I've seen in years.

OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SERIES
The Colbert Report
Conan
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Real Time With Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

Thoughts from the Media Room: SNL? Really?

OUTSTANDING TV MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Cinema Verite
Downton Abbey
The Kennedys
Mildred Pierce
The Pillars of the Earth
Too Big To Fail

Thoughts from the Media Room: This was a tough one for me, I haven't watched any of them. I've heard great things about most of them. But i've heard the most about Pierce and it was on HBO so it has that going for it as well.

So, that's it and we'll check back in a few months to see the winners and the awkward losers.
