8:31 - Billy always has the best opening montages!  I find it so cool how they put those together.

8:36 - I'm reminded of Billy Crystal in Soap back in the 1970's for some reason, Billy has to be around 60 and is looking pretty good.  He's actually 63, had time to look it up during the singing bit.

8:42 - That guy from Bosom Buddies is the first presenter of the evening.  Hugo gets the first award for Cinematography.

8:44 - Double up the awards presentation for the star of the film The Burbs, Art Direction.  Hugo again.

Tonight like most Award Shows, I'll be posting Live Blogs of The Oscars.

Happy Oscars Day - The Nominations

So this is it, all the marbles. Tonight's the night. The four hours we'll regret after it's all said and done. But we do it every year.

I don't know if you do the competition of picks in your house like we do here, but you can get a ballot from Movie Fone.

Best Picture
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse

Thoughts from the Media Room: I truly think The Artist will win, but I pick what i liked the best. The Artist was a cool movie, unlike anything we've seen in a long time. It was a great story and greatly acted. But after watching Hugo, I was stunned and the movie truly took me to a whole other place when watching it.

Best Director
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life

Thoughts from the Media Room: A Director willing to put that together, should get the prize. A movie clearly not for everyone, something just for the craft of it all.

Best Actor
Demián Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Gary Oldman, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Brad Pitt, Moneyball

Thoughts from the Media Room: It amazed me that without actually speaking, how much emotion was in his face during the fall of his career and life. Great performance.

Best Actress
Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn

Thoughts from the Media Room: In my opinion this is the toughest category this year. Any of these great women could and should take the award this year. But I thought Meryl transformed herself into Maggie Thatcher to the point, you couldn't see Meryl in there anymore.

Best Supporting Actor
Kenneth Branagh, My Week With Marilyn
Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Nick Nolte, Warrior
Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Max von Sydow, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Thoughts from the Media Room: I'd like to see Jonah Hill get it here, just because really. No real reason.

Best Supporting Actress
Bérénice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain, The Help
Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer, The Help

Thoughts from the Media Room: I'd LOVE to see McCarthy get this award here. Just to see her get up there for this movie would be amazing. I'm also thinking her speech could be epic if she were to win.

Best Original Screenplay
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids
J.C. Chandor, Margin Call
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
Asghar Farhadi, A Separation

Thoughts from the Media Room: I'd like to see Bridesmaids win here for the same reasons as above.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Alexander Payne, Jim Rash, and Nat Faxon, The Descendants
John Logan, Hugo
George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Beau Willimon, The Ides of March
Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, Moneyball
Peter Straughan and Bridget O’Connor, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Thoughts from the Media Room: I can't say enough good stuff about Hugo.

Best Animated Film
A Cat in Paris
Chico and Rita
Kung Fu Panda 2
Puss in Boots
Rango

Thoughts from the Media Room: I'm thinking Rango here for some reason.

Best Foreign Language Film
Bullhead (Belgium)
Monsieur Lazhar (Canada)
A Separation (Iran)
Footnote (Israel)
In Darkness (Poland)

Thoughts from the Media Room: Always the tough call when making picks, but I'll go with Canada since that's where I'm from.

Best Cinematography
The Artist
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
The Tree of Life
War Horse

Thoughts from the Media Room: A stunning film just to sit there and watch.

Art Direction
The Artist
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Hugo
War Horse

Thoughts from the Media Room: Again, I got nothing.

Costume Design
Anonymous
The Artist
Hugo
Jane Eyre
W.E.

Thoughts from the Media Room: Not going to lie, but when I first saw Anonymous I thought of the hacking groups that's been working overtime since last week. I got nothing else to add to this one.

Documentary Feature
Hell and Back Again
If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front
Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory
Pina
Undefeated

Documentary Short
The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement
God Is the Bigger Elvis
Incident in New Baghdad
Saving Face
The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom

Film Editing
The Artist, Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius
The Descendants, Kevin Tent
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
Hugo, Thelma Schoonmaker
Moneyball, Christopher Tellefsen

Thoughts from the Media Room: Dragon Tattoo should get it just for the brilliant first trailer. Do you remember that thing? Oh boy, it was a beaut eh.

Makeup
Albert Nobbs, Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston, and Matthew W. Mungle
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Edouard F. Henriques, Gregory Funk, and Yolanda Toussieng
The Iron Lady, Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland

Thoughts from the Media Room: Looking at this again since the nominations first came out, tougher than I had originally thought. I'll still go with Potter.

Music (Original Score)
The Adventures of Tintin, John Williams
The Artist, Ludovic Bource
Hugo, Howard Shore
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Alberto Iglesias
War Horse, John Williams

Thoughts from the Media Room: Two for John Williams and one for Shore, yikes. Tough Category.

Music (Original Song)
“Man or Muppet” from The Muppets, Bret McKenzie
“Real in Rio” from Rio, Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown, and Siedah Garrett

Thoughts from the Media Room: Just two original songs? Muppets every time.

Short Film (Animated)
Dimanche/Sunday
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
La Luna
A Morning Stroll
Wild Life

Short Film (Live Action)
Pentecost
Raju
The Shore
Time Freak
Tuba Atlantic

Sound Editing
Drive
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
War Horse

Thoughts from the Media Room: Transformers gets a nom, gotta get my geek on and go with that.

Sound Mixing
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
Monyeball
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
War Horse

Thoughts from the Media Room: Again, I'd like to see Transformers get it.

Visual Effects
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Hugo
Real Steel
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Thoughts from the Media Room: Did you watch Planet of the Apes? Wow, that was some crazy effects. The Apes looked fantastic. I have to give them an award for that.

So that's it, what were some of your favorites this year. Do you have some serious catch up to do to try and watch some of this years nominees?

Will you be tuning in tonight?

Music 365 - Day Five - Dogwhistle - The Life And Times Of An After Hours DJ

This should have been for yesterday, but some days are busier than others.

Back in the early 90's I used to listen to a lot of Techno Music, not electronica, Techno. This was back when it was impossible to find at the local cassette shop. You'd find The Prodigy in the Rock Section. Back before all electronica music sounded the same and became boring.

I can't seem to find this one on Amazon any more, I can only find it here.

Music 365 - Day Four - Howlin' Wolf - Moaning at the Moonlight

I first got into enjoying listening to the blues one Sunday night a few years back after watching the Adrien Brody film, Cadillac Records.

In the film you're introduced to a blues singer by the name of Howlin' Wolf. I had listened to a Blues track here and there, I never really looked to much further into. But in this movie, listening to the Howlin' Wolf songs, I thought to myself I have to read up on this guy. I'm loving his stuff. So after many visits to Amazon, Rate Your Music and Wikipedia I had to get listening to more.

I don't listen to the Blues that often, but when I do, I start here. I actually have a large Sketch Book in which I write down albums, bands and labels of stuff I need to check out further. I would like to get pick up this Chess Records compilation from Amazon.

So if you're looking to get into the Blues or if you just want to check it out, I highly recommend picking up this from Howlin' Wolf

Music 365 - Day Three - Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle

Day three of the project and I'm having a blast.

Sat down tonight in the computer room, opened up my weekly email from All Music and started to read about the weeks new release. Stumbled Upon Archers of Loaf, sounded interesting by the description. Thought I'd jump over to Rate Your Music and start reading about them, hmmm, to my surprise they were a band from the 90's. I don't know how I hadn't heard of them before tonight, seems like something I would have enjoyed back then. Looked at the album over at Amazon and read some reviews. A lot of reviewers said that Archers of Loaf had a real Pavement type of sound. Interesting, jumped over to You Tube to check out some tunes. First band that jumped out at me was Nirvana. Back in the 90's I was a huge fan of Nirvana, still am, I just don't listen to them as much I used to. Listened to my Nevermind tape so much that all the writing wore off and I don't know how it didn't just break apart from being listened to so many times. I listen to another few tracks tonight and I'm reminded of Sonic Youth.

Let me share these great tunes with you, maybe you've heard of them and they'll take you back to your youth. Maybe you hadn't heard of them, but they'll still take you back to those days when you rocked the long hair and enjoyed your plaid.

So here's a couple video's for you to check out and see for yourself.

Last Word:

Wrong:

This is the great thing about music discovery, this album is almost 20 years old and it still gives me as much joy as something new like yesterdays post. Takes me back to the days of walking to High School with Kurt screaming into my ears. Doesn't it just make you said when you hear Nirvana on a classic rock station. Ya, me too.

Music 365 - Day Two - Field Music - Plumb

Here we go with day two of the 365.

Yesterday saw the release of Field Music's
Plumbthe band described as a Indie Pop group that has a great old school rock sound that sounds like something you would have heard 30 years ago. It's got a funky sound at times, a prog sound at other, it's something you can have on in the background or enjoy with some serious volume. It's a solid album from start to finish.

Check out the single, A New Town, it's got a great bass-line that you almost get lost in.

See you tomorrow with the next album.

Music 365 - Day One - Sleigh Bells - Treats

I was on one of my favorite websites to find out about new music, Rate Your Music the other day and someone posted about a project they were doing. Music 365, they would post about a new album or try to listen to a new album every day. I'd heard of people doing Photography 365 projects, but I'd never heard of a Music 365 and I thought it was the coolest thing. A great way to share bands with other people. I love discovering new bands and new music, well, in most cases it's just new to me. I spent way too long the last couple of days thinking of what I'd kick it off with. It's a lot of pressure. So, one of the new releases today was Sleigh Bell's Reign of Terror. I haven't listened to that album yet so I didn't want to recommend that. So I thought, what's the next best thing, recommend their debut album.

What an album it is. With in 15 seconds of hearing the first track I was hooked on their sound. A great album to listen to while driving as it'll get you in the mood to drive fast and more than likely you'll want to ram into other cars. Like I said, good stuck in traffic music.

Check out Amazon's Description of Treats, The 2010 debut album from the Brooklyn Noise-Rock duo consisting of Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller. This highly anticipated album is a speaker-imploding, mind-melting mix of noize and melody with the accent on the former. Some say that this is the future of Rock 'n' Roll. Some say that this is the end of Rock 'n' Roll. Either way, it's Rock 'n' Roll!

Here's my favorite track from the album, Tell'Em.

So that's day one done, tomorrow I'll have something a bit calmer for you to enjoy.  Needed to start it out with a bang.
