Spin-offs

For some reason I've been on an 80's kick for about a week now and I don't know how it started, but it's had me flipping all over the Internet remembering my youth. The other day I posted about my journey ripping around IMDB and I stumbled upon Empty Nest and I mentioned about the lack of spin-offs these days. But thinking about the spin-offs, there are a lot more obvious ones then I originally had thought. CSI, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami. Law and Order, Law and Order:CI, Law and Order: SVU. Same title new town, that's not a fun spin-off, the 80's would put a character in for a few episodes just to have them spin-off to another show with a totally different title.

So I just looked up TV Spin Off's on Wikipedia and was stunned at some spin-offs I had no idea about or how many spinoffs some shows had. Some I had to read about just to remember the connection.

So I've compiled a few of them, the connections and cast notes.

Dawson's Creek had a spin-off called Young Americans that only lasted 8 episodes in 2000. The main character, Will Krudski, was introduced late in season three of Dawson's Creek as a childhood friend of the group who has kept in contact with Pacey Witter. Will goes to Capeside to visit with old friends while on spring break. After briefly dating Andie McPhee he returns to Rawley.

Some interesting cast notes: Katherine Moenning went on to star in The L Word as Shane McCutcheon. Ian Somerhalder went on to have some success on Lost and The Vampire Diaries. Kate Bosworth has had a somewhat successful career starring in several movies. Guest appearance by Charlie Hunnam as a bad boy went on to one of the best shows on Television Sons of Anarchy. Now movie star Michelle Monaghan also made guest appearances as Will's love interest.

Take a look at the wonderful promo:

Family Ties also had a couple of spin-offs, I had heard something about one of them on Twitter a few weeks ago. First I'll list off Day by Day and it's details first.

Brian Harper (played by Sheehan) was a college roommate of Steven Keaton from Family Ties. The show centers around a married couple with successful careers (he as a stockbroker, she as a lawyer) and a teenage son. After the couple had a second child, they decided to quit their jobs and open a day care center in their home. The episodes mixed stories about the day care center with those about the teenager and his friends. Louis-Dreyfus played a materialistic neighbor, while Thorne-Smith played the baby's nanny. A total of 33 episodes were produced and only 1 season aired. 33 Episodes was one season?? Wow.

Interesting Cast Notes: The show had actresses Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Courtney Thorne-Smith and Thora Birch on it and they all went on to varying successes. Mark Gordon went on from the show to become an award winning producer. He produced hits like Saving Private Ryan, The Day After Tomorrow, Tomb Raider and Speed. He also produces several television programs; Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, their spin-offs and Army Wives.

Take a look at this cast picture!

The second spin-off from Family Ties was The Art of Being Nick. It was a sitcom pilot created by Mark Helford, later of Roseanne, and starring Scott Valentine as artist/environmentalist Nick Moore. Also in the cast were Kristine Sutherland (who would go on the play Joyce Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who would go on to play Elaine Benes on Seinfeld), and John Daman. The show centered Moore's return to his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, to reconnect with his family.

There are two versions of the show's production history. In the first, The Art of Being Nick was a straight spin-off of the Nick character from Family Ties, but it was deemed too bizarre and burned off in the summer of 1986. The other story is that the two shows were not originally connected. NBC wanted a crossover appearance on one of their current hits as a preview of The Art of Being Nick, and chose Family Ties since it was also set in Ohio (Columbus). In fall 1985, following the two-hour Family Ties Vacation movie and a two-part season opener, the third show of the season introduced Nick as Mallory's (Justine Bateman) boyfriend. The appearance was a hit, and NBC, never enamored with the pilot, decided to keep Nick as a recurring character on Family Ties. The pilot aired the following summer in Family Ties' time slot.

One of the spin-offs I did know about was Just The Ten of Us that was spun-off from Growing Pains. What I didn't know was who was in the series. Let's put up some series details and then get to the interesting casting notes. Just the Ten of Us was an sitcom starring stand-up comedian Bill Kirchenbauer as Coach Graham Lubbock, a teacher and the head of a large Catholic family with eight children living in Eureka, California. The series was a spin-off of Growing Pains, in which Kirchenbauer portrayed the same character on a recurring basis. As the series progressed, Coach Lubbock's four eldest daughters, the teenagers Marie, Cindy, Wendy and Connie became the primary focus of the show. Just the Ten of Us aired on ABC starting with a trial run on April 22, 1988 and ending on May 13, 1988. After the first four episodes in an abbreviated first season were aired, the show was renewed for two more seasons, eventually ending after 47 episodes on May 4, 1990. The show was most notably a part of what would become that network's TGIF programming block. The only reason it was cancelled was the producers were in a battle with ABC so the network pulled it off the air and it never returned.

Interesting casting notes: Heather Langenkamp was mostly famous for her roles in The Nightmare on Elm Street series. What is interesting is that in 1988 she played the Marie character on Growing Pains and then on Just the Ten of Us. But then she was on Growing Pains again as a totally different character, Amy Boutillier. Heather also went on to play Nancy Kerrigan in a 1994 television movie. Jamie Luner went on to be in the original Melrose Place and is now working on All My Children. Matt Shakman who was JR on the series went on to direct such things as; The Good Guys, Ugly Better, House M.D., It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Brothers & Sisters and Six Feet Under to name a few. While that is pretty interesting, the most interesting casting is this; President David Palmer from 24 played Coach Lubbock's assistant coach. I've been surfing the net trying to find a picture of this, but I cannot and that's really too bad.

I used to love Head of the Class back in the day, but I didn't know that there was a spin-off. Billy aired on ABC for half a season from January to May 1992. A spin-off of Head of the Class, the series stars Billy Connolly as Billy MacGregor, a Scottish teacher who moves to America in order to build a new life for himself. Following the end of the Head of the Class series, Billy moves to Berkeley, California where he marries Mary Springer (played by Marie Marshall), a single mom with several children, so he could get his green card. The marriage is arranged in order to prevent Billy from being deported back to the UK. Billy becomes Mary's boarder, living in her basement apartment with the strictest of rules: no drinking, no smoking, no pets, and no sex. The series followed Billy's misadventures as he adjusts to life in California while staying one step ahead of immigration officials seeking to prove his marriage is a sham. Meanwhile, his relationship with Mary's children deepens to a parental level, and Billy and Mary likewise find themselves drawing closer together, although the series was cancelled before this subplot could be carried out.

Interesting cast notes: One of the children was played by current geek Leonard Hofstadter on The Big Bang Theory. Clara Bryant went on to several film and television roles like Molly on Buffy The Vampire Slayer for several episodes.

Another bit of shocking reading was that Inspector Gadget had FOUR spin-offs! Gadget Boy and Heather, Gadget Boy's Adventures in History, Gadget and the Gadgetinis and Inspector Gadget's Field Trip. Wow.

Everyone knows that a few shows spun out of Happy Days, but did you know that Happy Days itself was spun off from an episode of Love, American Style? Neither did I. That went on to further spin-off's including Laverne & Shirley (which had 3 spin-offs itself), Mork & Mindy(Had one spin-off) and Joanie Loves Chachi.

They attempted to do a spin-off of MacGyver but it didn't quite make it. The Coltons were a family of bounty hunters that appeared in MacGyver. They consisted of Frank, Jesse, Billy, Mama and the dog Frog. The first appearance is in the episode "Ma Dalton" where Jesse is actually out to arrest Jack Dalton's mother, but ends up joining forces with MacGyver and Dalton instead. The most prominent feature of the Coltons is in the episode "The Coltons" where MacGyver is merely given a cameo appearance and the Coltons are the focal point. The episode, which aired on ABC on 14 October 1991, was intended as a pilot episode for a spin-off about the Coltons, but failed. Starring as the Coltons were; Cleavon Little, Richard Lawson, Cuba Gooding Jr and Della Reese.

I really don't think I knew that Jake and the Fatman was a spin-off of Matlock. Looking back, it did have the same look and feel as Matlock, but I don't think I got the connection.

This one I seem to recall but I don't think I realized who was in it. Party of Five was a fantastic show back in the late 90's, well, it had a spin-off called Time of Your Life starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. I do seem to remember the show was awful. It featured the character Sarah Reeves Merrin whom Hewitt portrayed on Party of Five. The show centered on Hewitt's character's new life in New York City as she tries to find out more information about her biological mother's life in New York City before she bore Sarah, and search for her biological father. Along the way, Sarah moves into her mother's old apartment and makes a new group of friends. Who might those friends be? Why none other then Jennifer Garner and Pauley Perrette who went on to achieve fame on NCIS. The show was cancelled during it first season.

Another great 80's show that I used to love was Perfect Strangers. Before Family Matters, Harriette Winslow was originally the elevator operator at the Chicago Chronicle newspaper office in the third and fourth seasons of Perfect Strangers. Family Matters was a spin-off series given to this character in 1989. In the second episode of Family Matters, Harriette was fired as elevator operator at the Chronicle, but was soon re-hired as "Chief of Security", which explained her absence from dealings with the Perfect Strangers cast. In a 1991 episode "Stephanie Gets Framed", Steve Urkel helps Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) deal with her anxiety after she has to wear eyeglasses. In a Family Matters episode titled "Beauty and the Beast" Urkel sent a chain letter to his friend Cory Matthews, (Ben Savage) who lived in Philadelphia. In an episode of Boy Meets World, Cory says he receives a chain letter from his friend Steve. The two never actually appeared together on either show. In the original ABC broadcast, the ending gag of Family Matters' third season episode "Brains Over Brawn" is crossed over with the opening of the second episode of Step By Step, "The Dance". Urkel's jet-propelled flight pack causes him to fly through the Winslows' roof as one show ends, and crash-land in Port Washington, Wisconsin, where the Lambert-Foster family is enjoying a barbecue as the other show opens. Urkel goes on to help his science-fair pen pal, Mark Foster (Christopher Castile), and lifts Al Lambert's (Christine Lakin) spirits after her potential date dumps her just before a school dance. He reprises his "Do the Urkel" dance in the scene where Al gives the guy who dumped her his comeuppance. Urkel also makes a brief cameo in the 1997 episode "A Star Is Born", snapping a clapperboard on the set of the movie that Al was cast in over her two sisters. Another interesting note on Family Matters, Jaleel White played 7 different characters on Family Matters.

One of my favorite comedies of all time is Soap, I'm not sure if you've ever taken the time to watch Soap. You really should, so many famous people came from that show in it's short run of only 4 years. From Soap came Benson and it's one of the few spin-offs that lasted longer then the original.

Another spin-off I did remember was Living Dolls, if you remember this was a spin-off that came from Who's the Boss. The show featured Charlie Briscoe, a friend of Samantha Micelli. Samantha is dabbling in a modeling career and Charlie, a friend from Samantha's old Brooklyn neighborhood comes to visit. While doing some test shots for a dog food commercial, it is discovered that Charlie is very photogenic. Charlie was then befriended by the owner, Trish Carlin of a modeling agency for teenaged girls. The reason I've included this one in this post is because of who was in the cast.

Leah Remini of course played Charlie Briscoe who went on to star in King of Queens for several years. Turns out that Halle Berry and Vivica Fox played the same character, Fox play Emily Franklin in the pilot episode which had to be re-shot in which the role was then given to Halle Berry.

Turns out Living Dolls wasn't the only spin-off they did from Who's the Boss. They tried to make one around Mona(Katherine Helmond) and the pilot tested so badly that it never even made it to air.

The other was called Charmed Lives and it starred Donna Dixon and Fran Drescher. It's described as two women with nothing in common, that are constantly feuding, becoming friends while competing for the role of Princess Viancelli on a string of pasta commercials run by Angela Bowers' ad agency. They become such close friends that they decide to share an apartment. Stellar stuff right there folks, no wonder it only lasted 4 episodes.

One spin-off that I didn't know about was one from Cheers, relax I know Frasier came from Cheers. I'm speaking of The Tortellis which was based around Carla's ex-husband and slimeball Nick Tortelli and his new wife Loretta Tortelli played by Jean Kasem. Somehow this wonder even with guest appearances by Carla, Norm and Cliff only lasted 13 episodes. I can't imagine why.

Enjoy the first ten minutes of this wonder child.

Wow, I didn't know that Family Feud was actually a spin-off of a game show called Match Game.

One last thing I'd like to pass on for this post, did you remember You Can't Do That on Television? Did you know that it had 3 spin-offs? No, either did I.

A journey around IMDB...

When I'm on the couch I like to pick up the Ipad and browse around the IMDB app starting with something I'm watching and just bounce around learning who was in what. Then it turns into this giant tangled six degrees of seperation type thing.  It's actually quite fun and you can learn that all sorts of people have been in things that a) You didn't know or b) You totally forgot.

So tonight, I was watching Home Alone so that's where I'll begin tonight's journey.

Home Alone and the sister Linnie looked familiar to me and off we go. The actress is, Angela Goethals who was in an episode of Six Feet Under which also had her mom from Home Alone Catherine O'Hara in it for a few episodes. O'Hara was also in Curb Your Enthusiasm, holy crap, look at that Blossom aka Mayim Bialik was in it as well, didn't know that. Her character was Jodi Funkhouser? Wow, nice. Double holy crap, she went on from Blossom to The John Larroquette Show? I used to love that show! Wow, there was a lot of people on that show, didn't know Ryan Stiles was on it, ya, the guy from Whose Line is it Anyway and now Two and a Half Men in a very bad role. But what's this?  He played a clown on Who's The Boss in 1981? Whaaaaat? Betty White was in two episodes of Who's the Boss? Come on, this night is getting crazier by the minute. Thanks IMDB!  At first I was shocked to see that Leslie Nielson was in it for a few episodes, but then I saw the episode titles and I remembered that he was one of many boyfriends for Mona. So let's see what Leslie Nielson has been in. Huh, bringing this back through Betty White for a moment he was in an episode of Golden Girls. Let's take a look and see who else was in that. Of course, spun off from Golden Girls was Empty Nest starring Richard Mulligan, that one I did know, but what I didn't know was that it was on for 7 SEASONS!
Damn! I really don't think it would last that long in todays tv world. Apparently that then spun off to Nurses in 1991. You don't see too many spinoffs on tv anymore. Weird. Starring in Nurses as Paco Ortiz, his second character named Paco in a few years, he first played a Paco on Night Court a few years before, holy stereotypes in the 80's. The actor Carlos Lacamara, but Ant, who the hell is that? Take a look at the picture and you know him. He's been in things like Persons Unknown,
Days of Our Lives and Desperate Housewives. He was also in Alf apparently and would you believe that out of the Tanners that only father Willie Tanner actor Max Wright is still getting acting jobs. I know shocking. He was in an episode of Mr. Belvedere, used to love that show. Why do I feel that some of these shows were on Friday nights? I better look that up. Ok, that's scary, it ran on Friday's from 85 - 89 where it got moved to, get this. Saturday nights for half a season. SATURDAY NIGHTS!?!? How do I remember when a show was on a Friday night when I was 11 years old??  I guess I knew even then that I'd have a lot of interest in this kinda thing.  This has been quite the night so far, I've learned a few interesting tidbits. Let's not stop,  let's keep it going. Actually, I'm thinking Empty Nest was also on Fridays at one point. I gotta look into that. Nope Saturday nights?? Again with these Saturday nights, I really need to look into historical tv schedules at this point. That'll be thrilling! Holy crap! Over 18 million people watched Empty Nest on average in its first season. Watching more tv then ever they say. HAH! The only thing you can watch on Saturdays now is Cops and bad TLC programming.  Let's get back to Belvedere. Sadly Mr B passed away a few years ago. Hmmm, the mom was in an episode of Castle last season, that's cool. Why young Wesley was in an episode of Burn Notice last year. Cool again. Oldest son Kevin hasn't acted in anything since 1993, but is writing, producing and directing a show called Shank! this year. Never heard of it. What'd he do for the 17 years in between? Let's go back to Wesley because he was in Wonder Years for an episode and there has got to be some interesting people that were in the Wonder Years. I'd like to point out that The Wonder Years won 22 Golden Globes for 55 Nominations in 6 Seasons! Woah, Jeremy Davies aka Daniel Faraday from Lost was on The Wonder Years! Seth Green and Peter Billingsley. Ralphie F'in Parker! Screetch was on TWY! ROSS! Ross was on The Wonder Years, Why do I feel like Oprah on a favorite things episode?  And YOU get a role on The Wonder Years, and you get a role, and you get a ROOOOOOLE!!  But what else did Ross do in the 80's I wonder. Ok, turns out, not much. But he was in Blossom, woah, IMDB, I've circled back on myself. This must be a sign, you're right. WHO ELSE WAS IN BLOSSOM!! Older brother Anthony was on Prison Break for an episode, boring. He was in Dark Knight?!?!? This site continues to amaze me tonight, but let's look back into Blossom. You know who else was in Blossom for two episodes? Good thing you're still reading because I know you want to know! KITTY FOREMAN!! Ok, stranger than anyone than who was in Blossom was who directed 30 episodes of it. Get this, Bruce Banner himself, Bill Bixby! He directed stuff? Turns out he directed 34 things. Sledge Hammer! For 8 episodes, let's dig in. Star of Sledge Hammer! was David Rasche who recently was in Rubicon as James Wheeler.
The main boss in that was Truxton Spangler, who looked so familiar to me at the time, turns out he's hardly been in anything. But he did write the screenplays for both Original Sin and The Witches of Eastwick. Plus a few other things. That's interesting. Another holy crap moment, James Badge Dale star of Rubicon and The Pacific, was actually Chase on 24 in Season 3!

Here he is in Rubicon.

And here in 24:

I know, totally didn't see it when I saw Rubicon this year.  That's why I love IMDB surfing and I need to get some sleep from this crazy journey.

SAG Award Nominations

So the other day we had the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards and today the 17th Screen Actors Guild Nominations came out.  There is all sorts of snub talk if you follow twitter; which I find amusing.  After looking at the Globes the other day I thought, "really??" a few times, but for the most part the list looked ok in my books.  Sure if you take Piper Peribo out of her category it makes sense, but from what I can gather 5 other actresses were snubbed in the category.  They can't nominate everyone, it really does take away from the nomination doesn't it? @ChrisBailey83 on Twitter said it best, "Like giving everyone a good job sticker." Totally.  There are those that deserved to be nominated and you know what, maybe they did.  But there are only FIVE spots per category, some of the categories are STACKED and there is no one not deserving of being nominated, so who do you pull you snub hater? Huh, who'd ya pull?  That's right, you couldn't because then personx would be deemed snubbed as well.  But at the end of my rant, what's Hollywood without a little drama.

Alrighty, let's look at the nominations.

Television

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries

John Goodman, You Don’t Know Jack
Al Pacino, You Don’t Know Jack
Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship
Edgar Ramirez, Carlos
Patrick Stewart, MacBeth

Al won at the Emmys last year, so I'm going to give it too him again.  I've always liked Goodman, but I've always liked Pacino more.  Well, 80's and 90's Pacino, not so much the 00's, you can lump DeNiro in there as well.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries

Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
Catherine O’Hara, Temple Grandin
Julia Ormond, Temple Grandin
Winona Ryder, When Love is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story
Susan Sarandon, You Don’t Know Jack

Falls into the same thing as Al, they couldn't rave enough about Temple Grandin at the Emmys last year. So I've got to assume that the Guild will recognize this performance again.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series

Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House

Hall won it last year but last year was a much better season of Dexter, but I still gotta go Hall.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series

Glenn Close, Damages
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Does Hargitay have something on the Guild?  She's been nominated 5 out of the last 7 years, no Sagel here? Really? Now that's a snub.  I will admit, that I never got into Mad Men, really wasn't my thing, but I heard Moss was fantastical this year.  Going with her.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Steve Carell, The Office
Chris Colfer, Glee
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family

Ummm, my list appears to be missing the outstanding Jim Parsons.  WTF!! As I noted in my rundown of the Globes, if I can't give it to Parsons I gotta give it to Baldwin.  30 Rock wouldn't last too long without Baldwin.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series

Edie Falco, Nurse Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Jane Lynch, Glee
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland

Aren't we getting a little crazy with all the Betty White love the last couple of years.  Hot in Cleveland? Come on.  I would watch Lynch in anything.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire
The Closer
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men

No Walking Dead? Huh. Ok.  Way to be lame Guild, you'd think if you had the word Guild in your association you'd be kinda cool and love Zombies, but hey, whatever.  I have to think the Guild will be loving the Scorsese involved Empire and that's why I'm picking it.  They have loved on Mad Men a lot in the past so that's probably a real safe bet if you're into that kinda thing.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series

30 Rock
Glee
Hot in Cleveland
Modern Family
The Office

I know I ranted on snubs to open this post, but this category is just stupid.  30 Rock, comedic genius, I get it.  Glee, not really having a consistent year if you ask me and I'm not sure if I would even call it a comedy.   Hot in Cleveland? Whaaaat? The Office, having a BRUTAL year.  No Big Bang?  No Raising Hope? No Cougar Town? No Community? Weeds was back into the funny stuff this year, what about that?  This category frankly offends me as a TV lover.
Movies

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Jeff Bridges, True Grit
Robert Duvall, Get Low
Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours

I picked Franco for the Globes, but rightly so Bridges was nominated here.  A toss up for me.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Annette Bening, The Kids are All Right
Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Hilary Swank, Conviction

@Flintz on Twitter tells me that Rabbit Hole isn't all that it's cracked up to be, so I'm making this pick because of him and sticking with Bening.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Christian Bale, The Fighter
John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone
Jeremy Renner, The Town
Mark Ruffalo, The Kids are All Right
Geoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech

I hear that Bale in The Fighter might be his best performance yet, but I really like Renner in anything. I'm so torn!
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit

I really need to see these movies to make this pick.  The critics say that Kunis is great in Swan and I love Carter in most things she's in.  Again a tough one.
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Black Swan
The Fighter
The Kids are All Right
The King’s Speech
The Social Network

I've only watched The Social Network and I loved it, made me think about just how big Facebook is and how inter-woven it is into our everyday lives.  Hey, Facebook me, I'll catch you on Facebook.  Then when you start thinking about 500 million people are on it.  That stat just freaks me out when you think about how many people are actually on the Internet and how many of those are on Facebook.  As of 2009 there was 1.7 Billion people on the planet are on the Internet.  So basically 1 out of every 3 people on the Internet are checking their Facebook.  That's NUTS!  Another crazy stat, Flickr hosted 4 billion photos as of October 2009.  2.5 Billion Photos get uploaded onto Facebook a MONTH!  That's 30 Billion a year.  Sorry to go on about this, but my god, Facebook has taken over the planet.  No wonder Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire on the planet.  He's worth more then Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.  In a matter of years he's gathered that much wealth.  In fact Facebooks revenue might cross the 2 billion dollar mark this year.  I've totally side tracked here.  Bottom line on this category, I just don't know.  All good picks, but it does appear to be missing something.  A little movie called Inception?  But again, who do you pull? ;)

SAG Honors for Stunt Ensembles

Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture

Green Zone
Inception
Robin Hood

Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series

Burn Notice
CSI: NY
Dexter
Southland
True Blood

?? I'll go with Burn Notice, a show about spies has to have stunts, right?

Golden Globe Nominations and my picks to win...

So The Globes got announced this morning and I'm stunned how often I see
The Tourist on this list. This movie didn't get reviewed very well by anyone and was described as a movie for Depp and Jolie to look beautiful in and that's about it. I've made my picks where possible and explanations for making them.

Who are your favorites in each category?

MOVIES

Best Picture - Drama

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King's Speech
The Social Network

This one is going to be tough for me, these are all really, really good movies. At this point I'm torn between Social Network and Inception. I've yet to see The King's Speech so that might get thrown in there as well at some point. I hear great things about that movie. So, I can't make a pick at this point.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids are Alright
Red
The Tourist

Wow, this is a weak category. I've heard great things about Kids, so I've gotta go with that one.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
Colin Firth, The King's Speech
James Franco, 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter

Another tough one, but I have to go with Franco at this point. I've heard he's fantastic in 127 Hours. Again when I see The King's Speech that might change to Firth.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

Halle Berry, Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman, The Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
Natalie Portman, Black Swan
Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine

I've heard that Winter's Bone is one of the best movies of the year, kind of surprised it didn't get a nomination, but I guess there is flashier movies got that attention. I need to watch these to really make a pick.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp, The Tourist
Paul Giamatti, Barney's Version
Jake Gyllenhaal, Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey, Casino Jack

Nothing is jumping out at me at this point, just to make a pick I'll take Wonderland.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Annette Bening, The Kids Are Alright
Anne Hathaway, Love and Other Drugs
Angelina Jolie, The Tourist
Emma Stone, Easy A
Julianne Moore, The Kids Are Alright

I'm leaning to Bening at this point, but I'd really need to see the movies to make a true pick.

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams, The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
Mila Kunis, Black Swan
Melissa Leo, The Fighter
Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom

Best Supporting Actor

Christian Bale, The Fighter
Michael Douglas, Wall Street 2
Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
Jeremy Renner, The Town
Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech

I hear that Bale in The Fighter might be his best performance yet, but I really like Renner in anything. I'm so torn! Douglas in Wall Street 2? Really?

Best Director

Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
David Fincher, The Social Network
Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
Christopher Nolan, Inception
David O. Russell, The Fighter

Ugh, this is a brutal category. How do you pick? I can't!

Best Screenplay

Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy, 127 Hours
Lisa Cholodenko, The Kids are Alright
Christopher Nolan, Inception
David Sieber, The King's Speech
Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network

Another tough one, but I'm leaning to Nolan. How does someone actually think up Inception? No, seriously, how could you think of that?

Best Animated Feature

Despicable Me
Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3

The easiest pick of the list.

Best Foreign Language Film

Biutiful
The Concert
The Edge
I Am Love
In a Better World

Best Original Song

Bound to You, Burlesque
Coming Home, Country Song
I See the Light, Tangled
There's a Place For Us, Dawn Treader
You Haven't Seen the Last of Me, Burlesque

Best Original Score

Alexandre Desplat, The King's Speech
Danny Elfman, Alice in Wonderland
AR Rahman, 127 Hours
Hans Zimmer, Inception
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network

When I walked out of The Social Network, the first thing I thought of was how amazing was that score? Plus it would be awesome to see Trent Reznor up there accepting an award.

TELEVISION

Best Television Series - Drama

Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men
The Walking Dead

I'd love to see Walking Dead take it, but I think Boardwalk will get it because it's prolly more "Hollywood" of a pick. Mad Men can't win again can it?

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama

Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House

Come on. Give it to him already. Cranston can't win it every year, can he?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Piper Perabo, Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Second easiest pick of the list. How Katey hasn't won for this role yet is beyond me.

Best Television Series - Comedy

30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie

Funniest and most consistent show on Television.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy

Toni Collette, The United States of Tara
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Lea Michele, Glee

I really enjoyed this show and I don't think it gets enough press. To be different I'll take Linney and she was really good in this tough role.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Thomas Jane, Hung
Matthew Morrison, Glee
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Another easy pick for me as Parsons is awesome on TBBT. If it's not Parsons I'd like to see Baldwin get it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Scott Caan, Hawaii Five-0
Chris Colfer, Glee
Chris Noth, The Good Wife
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
David Strathairn, Temple Grandin

Another awesome performance.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Hope Davis, The Special Relationship
Jane Lynch, Glee
Kelly MacDonald, Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Duh.

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

Carlos
The Pacific
Pillars of the Earth
Temple Grandin
You Don't Know Jack

Temple won a ton of awards last year at the Emmy's I guess, it's someone else's turn.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Hayley Atwell, Pillars of the Earth
Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
Judi Dench, Return to Cranford
Romola Garai, Emma
Jennifer Love Hewitt, The Client List

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Idris Elba, Luther
Ian McShane, Pillars of the Earth
Al Pacino, You Don't Know Jack
Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship
Edgar Ramirez, Carlos

Luther is simply awesome and I've loved Idris since The Wire and would see him in anything.

And that's it. The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, January 16, 2011 on NBC .

My Christmas Wishlist - TV Edition

I don't know how I got thinking about this, I'm guessing it was all the chatter about year end top ten lists.  So I've put together some items that I'd like to see Santa deliver this Christmas for this tv fanatic.

1) Bring all the superior American Cable networks to Canada in High Definition.

We've got HBO already and that's a step in the right direction.  AMC has recently arrived in Canada, but alas it's only standard definition.  When watching people cook meth, work in an office in the 60's or kill some zombies.  We really need to see that in High Definition.  FX also needs to come to Canada in some HD glory: Archer, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Justified, The League, Louie, Rescue Me and Sons of Anarchy need to watched by Canadians without coughing up money for Superstations or the DVD's.

Let me put it to you this way; here is Stephen Kings Top 10 Shows of 2010.

10. Morning Joe - MSNBC
9. Boardwalk Empire - HBO
8. SpongeBob SquarePants - Cartoon Network
7. Sons of Anarchy - FX
6. Dexter - Showtime
5. Damages - DirecTV
4. The Event - NBC
3. Breaking Bad - AMC
2. The Walking Dead – AMC
1. Friday Night Lights - DirecTV

See what I'm saying.  The big 4 are no longer ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX.  Showtime, HBO, AMC and FX Network are putting out far superior programming.  Just look at the nominees for all the Dramatic categories Awards season.
While we're at it, bring us USA Network and TNT.

USA Network:
Burn Notice, White Collar, Covert Affairs, Psych, Royal Pains

TNT:
The Closer, Hawthorne, Leverage, Memphis Beat, Men of a Certain Age, Rizzoli & Isles, Southland.

Sure, they aren't at the same quality level as HBO, Showtime(which we need as well), AMC or FX but they still offer some great shows.

2) Cogeco, my cable provider to give me the option of a nice Topfield brand PVR. They're churning out a version that can record 4 shows and watch another live show all at the same time! 5 shows in one timeslot! A tv fan can dream! AWESOME! Plus it comes with a 1 TB Hard Drive. That's a whole lot of HD recording. Bring it Cogeco! BRING IT!

3) Life long subscriptions to Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Report and Variety. I've been a subsriber of EW for close to 15 years now and I've always loved the magazine. But a life long subscription would be wonderful. As for Hollywood Reporter and Variety, they offer a daily issue that has all sorts of details, news and industry insider information that is wonderful for a person like me. All that information comes at a price, 299 a year per magazine. Something a guy like me really can't justify, I'd enjoy it, but I can't justify it.

Numbers 4 and 5 are much smaller, but equally as difficult.

4) Move Community from 8:00 PM to 8:30 and put new show Perfect Couples in the 8:00 PM slot. You put a rookie there last year in Community and why not try it again this winter/spring. Then give Community a chance too breathe against Shit My Dad Says instead of getting killed by Big Bang Theory every Thursday.

5) Please, pretty please Santa, I've been really good this year. Please renew Detroit 1-8-7 for a second season. I really like this show and so do other people. Even if the ratings have slipped quite a bit down to 6.7 million people, it's still a really really good show and deserves a second season. If anyone can get the show renewed it's you Santa.

Thanks Santa, I'll leave some cookies and milk on the table :)

Special dates the tv viewer might need to know this week

As we get closer to Christmas, the tv schedule is going to get a little out of wack, things are being shuffled around, specials are being planned and marathons are coming.

I was just on thefutoncritic's amazing website and they've got listed all the important dates and times of things happening.

I've gone through them to pull out the speciality American stations we don't get to make the guide a little more Canada friendly.

Sunday:

7:00
For those that are still watching Running Wilde, Fox is trying to fit this thing in anywhere and they've picked Sunday at 7:00 this week.

8:00
Amazing Race 17 finale - CBS.

HBO Special: Wishful Drinking - HBO
This looks like it'll be interesting, a special from Carrie Fisher.

What's Playing in the Media Room - December 9th 2010

My viewing of last night: I started my night off with Survivor and my god if this isn't the worst group of contestants in Survivor history, why wouldn't he have picked Sash.  Duuuumb.  I thought it was awful that the remaining players decided to eat the chicken with Jane gone from camp.  The chicken isn't just for Jane, it's for the team, but they all knew the attachment she had to it, they had to know that'd break her heart.  Not cool.  Benry is a big strong dude, I see why they voted him out.  It had to be either him or Fabio, either way it was a good move.  From my count, they may be the first wise decision they've made.  I'm really not sure why the jury in all their wisdom was shaking their heads in disapproval once the decision came in.  Bitter much?  Then I hit two of the four ABC comedies with Modern Family and Cougar Town.  Both I thought were solid episodes last night.  Modern Family pulled it back from the kids to the adults for the most part and it really felt like a season one episode.  Jay treating Phil like he did in the first season was a great flashback to that Father In Law/Son In Law teasing we saw before.  Even the insecure Claire trying to keep Gloria away from the dance and keep it her thing.  Felt very season one.  Maybe that's why I really liked the episode.  I haven't been enjoying season two as much as the first as I stated yesterday;  tt's been VERY up and down compared to the first season where pretty much every episode was funny.  Hopefully this is the turn around that the show needs in my opinion.  Cougar Town, a bit predictable but still very very funny.  I think I like this show because it reminds me of my own life a little bit.  A close group of friends that always like to hang out and while hanging out a wee bit of wine is consumed.  I have to ask though, what the hell was up with Grayson at the end when Bobby qualified for the tourney.  Running around like a child?  Season One Grayson prolly would have clotheslined that Grayson.  They've totally changed the character in every way, sure he's come a ways and admits that the group is his closest friends and he loves it.  He used to be a cool bar owner and they've turned into a brainless moron.

Let's take a look at what one of my favorite nights of the week brings.

Shrek The Halls - 8:00 - ABC

This must be quite good as it's the second time it's been on in two or three weeks now.

The Big Bang Theory - 8:00 - CBS - Season 4 Episode 10

Episode Title: The Alien Parasite Hypothesis

Amy crushes on one of Penny's dim ex-boyfriends. Raj and Wolowitz argue over who'd be the better superhero.

I don't know anyone that watches this and thinks it's only ok.  EVERYBODY loves this one, as they should.  Sheldon has become one of the greatest characters in tv history, that being said I'm glad they're including the rest of the cast in the show again ;)  I hope we get a little more of a tease from Penny still having some feelings for Leonard tonight.  Them getting together was awful for the show, but it's cute that she still has feelings for him.  And as a side note, why does TBBT have to have the longest episode titles in HISTORY?

Community - 8:00 - NBC - Season 2 Episode 11

Episode Title: Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas

Abed wakes up in stop-motion animation making him believe that the group must re-discover the true meaning of Christmas. With the help of Professor Duncan, the group explores Abed's winter wonderland and soon discovers the truth behind Abed's madness.

I've ranted about Community in the past on this blog, but this is going to be the highlight of the night for me.  Stop motion! That's all that's got to be said.

Bones - 8:00 - Fox - Season 6 Episode 9

Episode Title: The Doctor in the Piano

Booth and Brennan investigate the mysterious death of a surgeon whose life and death challenge Brennan's legendary objectivity. As the team sifts through the evidence, Brennan identifies more and more with the brilliant doctor and her life which makes her question some of her own choices.

The Vampire Diaries - 8:00 - The CW - Season 2 Episode 11

Episode Title: By the Light of the Moon

With a full moon approaching, Caroline helps Tyler prepare for his inevitable transformation. Stefan and Katherine play mind games on each other, and Damon and Alaric become suspicious when a mysterious visitor named Jules shows up in Mystic Falls, looking for her missing friend, Mason. Elena is frustrated at Jeremy and her friends' excessive efforts to protect her. Bonnie and Luca team up to work on a spell, though both continue to keep secrets from each other. Finally, Elijah makes an unexpected appearance with an offer that could change everything.

I"m a few weeks behind on this, but this really does get better every week.

Disney Prep and Landing - 8:30 - ABC

An elite unit of elves, Prep & Landing, ensures that homes around the world are properly prepared to be visited by Santa Claus each Christmas Eve.

Shit My Dad Says - 8:30 - CBS - Season 1 Episode 10

Episode Title: You Can't Handle The Truce

Henry tries to resolve a dispute between Ed and his neighbor Mr. Campbell, while Bonnie and Vince attempt to adopt a dog.

You know how I mentioned yesterday about shows just waiting to die and not get a season renewal, right here people.

30 Rock - 8:30 - NBC - Season 5 Episode 10

Episode Title: Christmas Zone Attack

At the urging of Liz and Avery, Jack reveals some secrets to his mother over her Christmas visit. Liz tries to get Jenna and Paul back together. Tracy tries to protect his new serious image by buying a film of his so it will never be seen.

On a side note, today at lunch we went over to The Worlds Biggest book store where I discovered this jem.  Wow, this thing is awesome and hilarious, the pictures can be, umm, shocking.  But if you like Frank from the show you'll enjoy this one.  Not too late to put it on your Christmas list.

A Barbara Walters Special: Oprah, The Next Chapter - 9:00 - ABC

The talk-show host discusses the end of her program and her upcoming cable network; memorable moments from ``The Oprah Winfrey Show.''

Apparently this is the special where Oprah tells Barbara that she's not even a little bit of a lesbian, ground breaking stuff here folks.

CSI - 9:00 - CBS - Season 11 Episode 11

Episode Title: 418/427

The CSIs set out to track down a pedophile suspected of murdering an FBI agent's wife and kidnapping his children.

The Office - 9:00 One Hour - NBC - Season 7 EPisode 11 and 12

Episode Titles: Classy Christmas Part 1 and 2

Holly returns to fill in during Toby's leave of absence, so Michael makes Pam throw a second office Christmas party to coincide with her return. Jim accepts Dwight's challenge to a snowball fight.

Amy Ryan returns to Scranton tonight, it's going to be so good.  I'm guessing this is what will eventually make Michael leave the show.  Amy Ryan was in The Wire way back when, have I mentioned how amazing The Wire is this week?  No? It's amazing, GO BUY IT!

Fringe - 9:00 - Fox - Season 3 Episode 9

Episode Title: Marionette

While the Fringe team investigate the case of a man who had his heart extracted, Peter deals with the revelation of who he's been dating for the last few months.

From what I can tell, tonight is the last night that Fringe will be in this timeslot before it moves to Friday nights to which I'm assuming is to die as most shows don't last on Fridays, except maybe Blue Bloods.  *just looked it up, Fringe should be returning Friday January 21st.

Nikita - 9:00 - The CW - Season 1 Episode 11

Episode Title: All The Way

Alex informs Nikita that Division is sending her on her first mission to kill the leader of a crime syndicate. Alex is concerned about killing someone, but Nikita reassures her and demands that she help execute the kill order. Birkhoff uncovers the shell program that a Division mole has been using to communicate with Nikita in the outside world and informs Percy and Michael. When Alex runs into problems on her mission, Nikita makes a quick decision to try to clear Alex's name. Back at Division, Jayden tries to prove that Alex is the mole, but Thom stands up for Alex and an unexpected accident clears her name.

I've been reading the hype on this episode for weeks, that's too bad because I gave up on this one about a month ago.  Like many did I think.

Barbara Walters Presents The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010 - 10:00 - ABC

The journalist interviews some of the year's top newsmakers, including Betty White, Kate Middleton, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Palin, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, LeBron James and ``Jersey Shore'' cast members.

Wow, Barbara has been busy with two shows in one night.  Jersey Shore? Come on Barbara I thought the name of the show was fascinating.  I wonder if the first question she asks them is, Why do you think America loves watching you slowly make America more stupid?

The Mentalist - 10:00 - CBS - Season 3 Episode 10

Episode Title: Jolly Red Elf

When a person in custody dies, retired CBI Director Minelli returns to question the team. After the death of a Santa, the CBI follows leads that take them to an AA group and the National Society of Authentic Santas.

Does anyone actually watch this one?
