A look into February's Television

The month starts a new tomorrow. So it's a good timeto take a look at what's coming up, new shows, season premieres and finales. Of course there are a few time-slot changes to look at as well.

February 1st:
Fabulous Cakes returns from it's hiatus with a new episode titled, Carolinas: Southern Stars, it's set to air 10:00 on TLC.

Fox will also be airing the first season finale of Million Dollar Money Drop, somehow it's only the series' tenth episode, seems like it's on everynight to me.

February 3th:
Bravo is back with what will be their fourth season of Million Dollar Listing. Have you ever watched this? I don't know how this thing is in it's fourth season. I also don't know who would be dumb enough to buy such an expensive home from these kids. Wow.

In looking up the promo, I see that they've dropped the emo kids they've had in the past. That being said, it doesn't look any better. Looks like Bravo Canada will be airing this at a different date.

February 4th:
NBC kicks of this Friday night with a new season of Who Do You Think You Are? Vanessa Williams is one of the celebrities profiled in this episode. Can't remember what this is or don't know what this is? It's the show where celebrities go searching their family trees and family histories to find out new things about their history.

CBS is airing the Superbowl's greatest commercials, great for Canadian viewers who never actually see these great commercials during the Super Bowl.

There is a Barbara Walters Special that night titled, A Barbara Walters Special: A Matter of Life and Death. Here's the description.  What do Barbara Walters, President Bill Clinton, David Letterman, Regis Philbin, Robin Williams and Charlie Rose all have in common? They all went from being in the spotlight to being in the operating room for life-and-death open heart surgery. Now in a groundbreaking report, the "brotherhood of the cracked chest club" (as Robin Williams describes them) all open their hearts to Walters and reveal their emotional stories of how they triumphed over heart disease. Each account is an intimate portrait of these most public figures, infused with laughter and tears. Walters also takes viewers on an unprecedented behind-the-scenes journey of her own battle from discovery of a faulty heart valve to the operating table and recovery. In addition, she talks to doctors, including her own, about what viewers, especially women, need to know to save themselves and their loved ones.

February 6th:

Super Bowl Time! Hopefully the great trailers that are expected that night hit the internet quickly after. Can't wait to see Captain America, Thor and Transformers 3 trailers.

Right after the Super Bowl Fox will be airing a special episode of Glee titled, Thriller. Here's a couple preview pictures.

February 7th:

The Chicago Code will premiere at 9:00 on Fox this Monday, taking over for Lie to Me. Here's the promo.

Stars: Jennifer Beals, Jason Clarke and Don Kress.

HBO will also be airing a special titled, Reagan, for those that like that kinda thing.

MTV is starting up the second season of My Life as Liz at 11:00. Here is the promo for that one.

February 9th:

See Paula in all her glory for the finale of Live to Dance. Season 2? I don't think so.

ABC will be piloting Mr. Sunshine. Matthew Perry's new series. He'll star as Ben Donovan, the self-involved manager of a second-rate San Diego sports arena who begins to re-evaluate his life on his 40th birthday.

Stars: Matthew Perry, Allison Janney and James Lesure.

It's sad, the girls of Friends have done, ok since the show ended. Well, two of them anyways. The guys, not so well.

The 9th will be an important date for many just because Justified is starting back up.

Here's the promo for the second season.

Everyone that has asked me about this show and I've told them to watch it, has LOVED it. Check out season 1 on DVD if you get a chance.

Storage Wars will be wrapping it's first season up on A&E at 10 on the 9th as well.

February 13th:

TLC has a special planned called The Queen.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards are taking place over at CBS that night.

In quickly trying to find out some more information about The Queen special it would appear that there are a lot of great movies on that night if you can't find anything else to watch.

February 14th:

The only new thing starting on that Monday is a show called Mad Love. Revolves around a quartet of single friends in New York City-- two who are falling in love and two who despise each other, at least initially. Just found a much better description for it. MAD LOVE is a comedy about a quartet of New Yorkers-two who are falling in love and another two who despise each other (at least for now). Ben, a lawyer, is a hopeless romantic trying to build a relationship with Kate, a beautiful, smart girl whom Ben thinks is the woman of his dreams. Larry, Ben's unrefined best friend and co- worker, is a guy who doesn't believe in love and has a long track record as the third wheel. Kate's roommate, Connie, works as a nanny
and finds Larry aggravating or does she? Larry and Connie have a lot in common, but refuse to let their guard down long enough to see it.

Stars: Jason Biggs, Sarah Chalke and Judy Greer. Hmmm, I can't seem to get a preview out of Youtube. I did come across one on another site, but the quality is awful. Here's a picture of the cast though.

February 16th:

This is going to be a great night. American Idol Hollywood Week starts up with a two hour episode.

Then we've got a season premiere and a series premiere to check out.

First off we've got the 22nd Season Premiere of Survivor: Redemtion Island. 18 castaways will compete against each other on SURVIVOR: REDEMPTION ISLAND, when the Emmy Award-winning series returns for its 22nd season. Two of the 18 castaways are former castaways who will return to seek redemption. This edition of SURVIVOR will feature a new twist when, for the first time, castaways who have been eliminated from the game will have an opportunity to seek redemption and return for a chance to win the million dollar prize. Each week at Tribal Council when a castaway is voted off, they will be sent to an isolated island called "Redemption Island," where they will live alone in exile. To stay on Redemption Island, they will need to compete in a duel against the next person eliminated at Tribal Council and sent to the Island. The winner of each duel earns the right to continue fighting for an opportunity to return to the game and the chance to compete for the title of Sole Survivor; the loser is sent home. The battle unfolds in Nicaragua where the 18 castaways will be divided into two Tribes of nine: the Ometepe Tribe and the Zapatera Tribe. The tribes are comprised of individuals from all different backgrounds with the same ultimate goal: to be the Sole Survivor. While 16 of the contestants are new to the competition, two are former castaways who will be given another chance to compete for the million dollar prize and one last shot at redemption.

Then we've got the start of the Criminal Minds spin-off. CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOR is a drama about an elite team of agents within the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) who use unconventional methods of investigation and aggressive tactics to capture the nation's most nefarious criminals. Unit chief Special Agent Sam Cooper is a mentally and physically fierce natural leader who is not afraid to put his career on the line in order to stand by his convictions. Cooper strives to avoid political bureaucracy and has handpicked an eclectic group of profilers to work outside the confines of Quantico. They include strong-willed and outspoken Beth Griffith, the newest member of the team who joins them from the FBI Threat Assessment Task Force; former British Special Forces soldier Mick Rawson, who is confident and handsome and works as a highly skilled marksman with an undiluted eye for rooting out evil;John "Prophet" Sims, a former convict with a street-smart edge and a calm, Zen-like presence who is determined to make amends for past sins; Gina LaSalle, an attractive, tough agent armed with a cunning sense of perception; and Penelope Garcia, a computer wizard who has spent years aiding Agent Hotchner and his BAU team on its toughest cases. This exceptional group of FBI operatives is strong in their beliefs and steadfast in their mission to bring the country's most dangerous criminals to justice.

With the later 10:00 start time, I have to wonder if it'll be a bit darky and grittier than the original series which airs at 9:00.

February 17th:

This my friends is a day I've been marking on my calendar for a long, long time. It's the day of the season finale, of which I hope will be a series finale of bleep my dad says.

February 18th:

The only real thing you should know about the 18th is this, Blue Bloods is scheduled to make it's big return to Fridays this day. BOOOO.

February 20th:

Another great night of Reality Premiere Greatness with Amazing Race Starting it's 18th Season.

Also that night, we're getting a glimpse in two the backstage of SNL with a two hour special.

This night is also giving us with what I would imagine to be the series finale of Episodes after just seven episodes.

February 23th:

The CW is bringing a reality series called Shedding the Wedding.

February 24th:

Rules of Engagement gets moved back to it's Monday at 8:30 slot.

Royal Pains finishes up it's second season.

February 25th:

Spartacus:Gods of the Arena finishes up its first season after 6 episodes. It will finish in Canada on the Sunday.

February 27th:

The Super Bowl of Film Lovers everywhere. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards starting at 7:00 with the red carpet. The ceremony will actually start at 8:30 at the Kodak Theatre which is hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

February 28th:

The Event makes it's big spring debut. Do you remember this show? I know I can't remember how it ended, in fact, I'm not really sure I actually saw the last couple of episodes. I just grew so frustrated with it. Some serious flashbacks of Flashforward.

What will be playing in my Media Room tonight: Wow, I listed out a boat-load of television choices and I'll be watching Shameless, Episodes, Californication and Harry's Law. That's it! Once a few episodes of Being Human are out, I'll do a mini-marathon to see what that's like. I gave up on 90210 last season and we turned our backs on the Cake Boss last season when he turned into a wee bit of a egomaniac.

A look at this week's television

It's a Monday morning and I'm not really feeling all that motivated to start working. So let's take a look at the week of television.

Monday

Repeats galore this night, actually it's not going to be just this night from what I remember when I looked at the schedule on the weekend.

All the CBS shows are taking the night off tonight. No Comedies and no Five-0.

We've got another thriller tonight on The Bachelor I'm sure, that then leads into a repeat of Castle. I know, I know, I'm pissed to, they gave us possibly the best episode of Castle ever and then they take the week off. Man tv can be so frustrating sometimes.

NBC is rocking the full lineup tonight, new Chuck, The Cape with guest star Mena Suvari and Harry's Law. I need to remember to check The Cape's ratings tomorrow, I'm very curious how this show is doing. I can't think it's doing any better than The Event of which it took it's time-slot. I thought the second episode of Harry's Law was much better than the first, it's still quite predictable but I was entertained last week.

Fox is pulling something curious, wasn't last week the first House we've in a while? I hope you enjoyed it because it's not on tonight. I know, strange right. Human Target gets the slot, Fox really puts a lot of weight behind that show. Don't watch it, is it any good? Speaking of shows that I wonder how they're still on the air, Lie To Me follows it up with it's "season" premiere. I really don't think this show will be back.

Here in Canada we get Shameless, Californication and Episodes that aired in America last night.

Movies on Monday: Fatal Instinct, Hard To Kill, Slap Shot 3.

Tuesday

Tuesday can't be as bad right?

No new Mercer on Tuesday, *sniff*

Ncis and Ncis:LA are new and I'm sure will continue their domination of Tuesday nights. With The Good Wife rounding out CBS' night. CBS execs must be loving Tuesday nights. Ratings winners and award winners.

ABC is putting in a repeat of No Ordinary Family at 8, a New V and what I think it is a great show at 10:00. Detriot 1-8-7.

NBC has one of their staples in The Biggest Loser followed up by a new episode of Parenthood.

Movies on Tuesday: Her Sister's Keeper, Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Wednesday

Wednesday is looking wacky.

CBS has what I think is the second last Live to Dance, followed by a repeat of Criminal Minds, then a new Blue Bloods.

NBC is coming at us with a double episode special of Minute to Win IT titled, Kids Rule. Then a new Law & Order:SVU.

It's not looking any better over ABC on Wednesday, repeats of The Middle, The Middle and Modern Family. Then a new Cougar Town at 9:30 which is the mid-season finale. Um, what? Then a new episode of the amazing looking Off The Map.

Movies on Wednesday: Six Degrees of Seperation, Almost Heroes.

Thursday

I know what you're thinking, does the week actually get any better? Why yes it does. Thursday is night. Thursdays is the craziest night on television for me.

Finally we're getting a new episode of Big Bang Theory. Sure, it's only been a repeat for a week, but it seems so much longer. Then Bleep My Dad Says with guest star Lee Majors, CSI with Marlee Matlin and reportedly Grissom makes an appearance and the Mentalist are all new.

NBC continues with their 3 hour comedy block. The most hyped episode of Community in a while, the Dungeons and Dragons episode is finally here! Then Perfect Couples of which I'm done with, it's awful. Then The Office, which atleast by the description sounds much better than last weeks very uneven and often unfunny episode. Then Parks and Recreation with guest star Will Forte, 30 Rock actually appears to be a repeat of the live show or possibly another live show and the soon to be gone Outsourced.

ABC has their entire Thursday night lineup of Wipeout, Grey's and Practice running.

Fox has a new episode of American Idol at 8:00, I'm loving the new panel, but aren't they letting a lot of people to Hollywood? Then a new episode of Bones.

The CW also has new Vampire Diaries and Nikita if you already didn't have enough to watch.

Movies on Thursday: Addicted to Love and Best in Show. If you get Movietime in Canada, they do have the classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles on at 9:00.

Friday

Fridays are looking thin now for me.

The Defenders is new and I haven't heard a thing about this show in a looooong time. Then Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials and a new CSI:NY.

NBC is bringing another new episode of Who Do you Think You Are? I've really got no interest in that one. Then a new Dateline.

ABC is coming at us with a new Supernanny and a new Primetime.

The CW is finally bringing back Supernatural and Smallville for their rapid fans.

Fox ofcourse has Kitchen Nightmares and Fringe.

Showcase Canada is airing Luther and I highly recommend that you watch this. GREAT Series.

Movies on Friday: Moonstruck, City Slickers, Game Over, A Beautiful Mind, The Color Purple, Speed Racer.

Saturday

Dana Carvey hosts Saturday Night Live, please bring us some new Church Lady. Linkin Park will be the musical act.

Movietime Canada has a great night of movies lined up. Big, The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Screen Actors Guild Awards - Live Blog - Second Hour

8:58 - Ok, so I was wrong.

8:59 - Portman and Kunis here to preview Black Swan.  If you haven't watched Black Swan, you should.  Great Film.  Holy crap those ladies got back to their seats fast.

9:00 - Tim Conway is still alive?  Looks like he's here to give a lifetime achievement award.  This is quickly becoming a very long and very boring introduction speech.  Has Ernest Borgnine done anything relevant in the last twenty years?  Isn't this lifetime award a wee bit late?

9:17 - Is anyone else getting tired of seeing these commercials for Sanctum?

9:18 - Whew, back to celebrating the rich and famous.  Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries.  Al Pacino for You Don't Know Jack.  I hear that movie is fantastic.

9:20 - The Social Network boys here to preview The Social Network.  Wow, Spiderman has a serious British Accent.  I thought he was from New York.  Just hearing the score from that movie gives me chills.

9:21 - Rosario Dawson, there is a name you don't hear very often these days.  Outstanding Female Actor TV Movie or Mini-Series.  Clare Danes wins like her fourth award for this role.  It's really starting to bother me that award is even called The Actor.

9:25 - Ok, it's taken about an hour and a half, but I've realized that these awards are brutally boring.  This show is the reason why people hate award shows.  I love these things normally, but I'm getting more alittle annoyed by all this pro pro rah rah actors stuff.

9:26 - Lets get shocked to see who has died this past year.  A lot of faces I know, didn't know all the names that's for sure.  We lost a lot of great actors this past year.

9:34 - They don't take many breaks, but my god when they do, they're super long.

9:35 - And we're back.  Susan Sarandon is here and she is giving out Oustanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role.  How can Bale not win this?  Oh, Hawkes was damn good in Winter's Bone.  Ah crap, Renner, love Renner.  He was great in The Town.  I wonder if Ruffalo actually thinks he's got a shot at this?  Ah, there it is.  Bale wins as he should.  Have you watched The Fighter?  Bale was certainly the best part.  Just fantastic.

9:38 - Woah, Batman is Welsh! Wow, that's cool, the guy he played is there.  Plus Superman is now British.  What's going on here?  Bale loves acting?  That audio clip certainly wouldn't make it sound like he loves it and finds it funny.  Have you heard the clip where Bale loses it because a guy walked into the room that he was "acting" in.  Golden.  Youtube, Bale loses it.

9:40 - Wahlberg really doesn't age does he?

9:42 - The Dude!

9:43 - Oustanding Female Actor in a leading Role.  How can't this go to Portman?  And it does indeed go to Natalie Portman.  Aren't the Oscars getting easier and easier to pick this year.

9:45 - Yeah! Union!  Protecting the actors!

9:46 - Did Portman just say don't be a asshole?

9:47 - I love how the actors union called the best picture, the best ensemble in a motion picture.  Keeping it about them.

9:49 - How cool does the trailer for The Adjustment Bureau look?

9:52 - Kidman here to give out Male Actor in a Leading Role.  Those are some great actors, but it's going to Colin Firth.  The big four actor categories certainly appear locked up for the Oscars next month.  Firth, Bale, Portman and Leo.  Lock it in.

9:56 - Holy beard batman!  What's up with that Sutherland?  The best ensemble for a motion picture goes to The King's Speech!  Another cruel reminder that I need to watch this movie.  Wow, this best movie award Oscar is going to be tight.

From my make shift media room to yours, I hope you enjoyed the show if you watched it.  I'll see you live blogging from the Oscar's next.

Screen Actors Guild Awards - Live Blog - First Hour

I had a kick out of live blogging the Globes a few weeks back, thought I would do it again for the SAG's.

7:58 - I've been kicked out of the Media Room, so I'm up in the bedroom with the fireplace going and watching the show.  Mrs. Media Room decided she wanted to watch a movie instead.

8:01 - They eat at this award show? But do they drink? There was no drink influenced speeches at the Globes and that was disappointing.

8:02 - Oh what the heck, the audio is off and it's driving me nuts after 10 seconds.

8:03 - Wow, these actors are quite nervous.  Ok, is the year of Betty White not over yet?

8:06 - Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series is the first award of the night and it goes to: Steve Buscemi.  Wow, the award groups are really loving Boardwalk this year.  That was a crazy tight category, any of those guys could have won that.  What's the deal with Dexter's beard?  Is he trying to add to his serial killer look?

8:09 - A preview of The Kids are All Right, I really don't get the hype behind this movie.  I thought it was just ok, I wasn't totally blown away.

8:12 - Outstanding Female in a Drama Series is up next, that goes to Julianna Margales.  Wow, back to back for the Good Wife.  I hear that show is fantastic, it's one of the few shows on television that I don't actually watch.  I can't watch them all folks ;)

8:15 - The first of what I'm guessing will be many commercials.

8:19 - And we're bag with two beautiful people, Taye Diggs and Sofia Vergara and they're here to present the award to the best Ensemble in a Drama Series.  Wow, Boardwalk Empire wins another award.  They're cleaning up in everything this year.  Good for them.  Took me a while to get into that one, but the second half of that first season was outstanding.  Holy bad spray on tan Batman!

8:24 - The most boring part of the show, the greeting from the assocation's president.  Blah, blah, blah, the actors are great, Hollywood is great.  Got it.  Check.

8:25 - Protect actors?  From what?  I see why this guy is the president.

8:26 - President Palmer!!!

8:27 - We're actually celebrating commercials actors?  Funny, they're showing us famous people that are in commercials. Not the struggling actors that are actually doing commercials.

8:29 - I love that Jason Bateman is back in Hollywood and is acting again.  Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role.  These actors are good, they all know where the camera is when their name gets announced.  Melissa Leo wins again!!

8:33 - Leo mentions the Union, what's the deal with this?  Their contract must be up soon.

8:37 - mmmm, Blue Freezies, commercials do work.

8:38 - Amy Poehler is here and she's looking fantastic.  Outstanding Male Actor in a Comedy Series.  Alec Baldwin!  He's truly the best part of 30 Rock!  5th consective win for his role on 30 Rock!  Wow.  That's impressive.

8:42 - Mr. Don. Draper, Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series, Tina Fey win perhaps?  Jon Hamm has guested on 30 Rock a few times.  Let's see who gets it.  Wow.  Betty White!  Looks like another year of Betty White.  I love her, but it just seems we're getting a little carried away with all the Betty White love over the last year.  Have you watched the SNL skit with Betty and her appearance on radio talking about her dusty muffin?  You should look it up on youtube, it's hilarious.

8:47 - The King' Speech preview, my god I still need to watch this movie.  I'm so running out of weekends to go watch it.

8:49 - Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series, Modern Family!!!  Glad to see it one over Glee, I like Glee and all.  But great actors they are not.

The speech has finished and it's 8:53 and I don't see this coming back before 9.  So you'll have to read the next post to see how this show closes its second hour.

What's Playing in the Media Room - January 28th 2011

Last night was a weird night of tv for me, watched Community and it was just ok and I mean just. Then hit the new show Perfect Couples, wow, what a garbage show. They fooled me last week, but damn, just awful. Two of the three couples are super annoying and it was just painful to finish. I'm not sure how many others out there would have actually finished. That's such a weird show, I watched the preview a couple months back and that was awful as well, last week it was actually funny and we both laughted quite a bit. But last night, yikes. Then came The Office, wow, should have turned that off after the Ricky Gervais appearance. It was downhill from there and fast. What a weirdly placed episode. I then at that point decided I had enough and came up to surf the net. You know what I love about Thursdays? There are so many 30 minute comedies to watch, when you're hammering away and cleaning them off your PVR, don't you feel so productive? Seriously, 8:00 next Thursday, yikes. Big Bang, Idol, Vampire Diaries and Community? *Head Explodes*

Thoughts from the Media Room: Wow, a lot of throw backs this week. She-Ra, Webster, Voltron. Nice. Would I buy them? Prolly not, well maybe the Webster one out of the discount pile in a few months for 19.99. Tupac died 15 years ago this September and we're now releasing his prison tapes? Seriously? Wow, that being said, Elvis died in 1977 and that family is still cashing in on it. MI-5 is a great show that people should rent. They made a second Open Season? Let alone a third? I would also rent The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, I hear this book is where the series really starts getting really good. The American version of the first movie, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo shuold be coming out around Christmas time. There is nothing here that I must drive the truck out to Best Buy to pick up.

Next week we've got Airwolf, Cake Boss and The Tillman Story

The Oscar Nominations

The Oscars have just been announced and let's take a look and what they've come up with.

Actor in a Leading Role
Javier Bardem in “Biutiful”
Jeff Bridges in “True Grit”
Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network”
Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”
James Franco in “127 Hours”

Thoughts from The Media Room: I've seen most of these and they're great performances, but I haven't watched The King's Speech, but I'm hoping to catch it this weekend. I've read that Firth is amazing in this role.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
John Hawkes in “Winter's Bone”
Jeremy Renner in “The Town”
Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”
Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech”

Thoughts from The Media Room: Bale was Dicky Eklund, a fantastic performance.

Actress in a Leading Role
Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”
Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”
Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter's Bone”
Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”
Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine”

Thoughts from The Media Room: What a weird category for me, The Kids Are All Right gets so much hype and I don`t get it. I didn`t think it was that great. I`m also hoping to catch Blue Valentine this weekend, it`s really a toss up for me between Williams and Portman, but I`ll go with Portman.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams in “The Fighter”
Helena Bonham Carter in “The King's Speech”
Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”
Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

Thoughts from The Media Room: I`m thinking that the two ladies from The Fighter will knock each other out of the competition and Hailee Steinfeld will get it. She was amazing in True Grit, about 20 minutes into the film I said, where`d they find this girl? She's amazing.

Animated Feature Film
“How to Train Your Dragon” Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois

“The Illusionist” Sylvain Chomet
“Toy Story 3” Lee Unkrich

Thoughts from The Media Room: Um? Where's Dispicable Me? #snub Is this even fair to the other two movies?

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” Production Design: Stuart Craig; Set Decoration: Stephenie McMillan
“Inception” Production Design: Guy Hendrix Dyas; Set Decoration: Larry Dias and Doug Mowat

“The King's Speech” Danny Cohen
“The Social Network” Jeff Cronenweth

Costume Design
“Alice in Wonderland” Colleen Atwood
“I Am Love” Antonella Cannarozzi
“The King's Speech” Jenny Beavan
“The Tempest” Sandy Powell
“True Grit” Mary Zophres

Thoughts from The Media Room: I always like to give this award to period pieces as they seem to have the most complex costumes and would have to do the most work to put the costumes together.

Directing
“Black Swan” Darren Aronofsky
“The Fighter” David O. Russell
“The King's Speech” Tom Hooper
“The Social Network” David Fincher
“True Grit” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen

Thoughts from The Media Room: Like woah, major #snub. A little movie called Inception and its director Nolan? Wow. Gotta go with Fincher then.

Documentary (Feature)
“Exit through the Gift Shop” Banksy and Jaimie D'Cruz
“Gasland” Josh Fox and Trish Adlesic
“Inside Job” Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
“Restrepo” Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger
“Waste Land” Lucy Walker and Angus Aynsley

Thoughts from The Media Room: The only one I've watched, a strange f'in movie. I'd like to watch Gasland and Inside Job before the Oscars actually air though.

“Killing in the Name” Nominees to be determined
“Poster Girl” Nominees to be determined
“Strangers No More” Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon

“The Fighter” Pamela Martin
“The King's Speech” Tariq Anwar

Foreign Language Film
“Biutiful” Mexico
“Dogtooth” Greece
“In a Better World” Denmark
“Incendies” Canada
“Outside the Law (Hors-la-loi)” Algeria

Thoughts from The Media Room: Picked it for the Globe and it won, so I'm going with it again.

Makeup
“Barney's Version” Adrien Morot
“The Way Back” Edouard F. Henriques, Gregory Funk and Yolanda Toussieng
“The Wolfman” Rick Baker and Dave Elsey

Thoughts from The Media Room: How could this not win? They created the Wolfman?

Music (Original Score)
“How to Train Your Dragon” John Powell
“Inception” Hans Zimmer
“The King's Speech” Alexandre Desplat
“127 Hours” A.R. Rahman
“The Social Network” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

“If I Rise” from “127 Hours” Music by A.R. Rahman Lyric by Dido and Rollo Armstrong
“We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3 Music and Lyric by Randy Newman

“True Grit” Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, Producers

Thoughts from The Media Room: The best I've seen this year, no movie had an impact on me like The Social Network.

Short Film (Animated)
“Day & Night” Teddy Newton
“The Gruffalo” Jakob Schuh and Max Lang
“Let's Pollute” Geefwee Boedoe
“The Lost Thing” Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann
“Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, a Journey Diary)” Bastien Dubois

Thoughts from The Media Room: Seems like an odd title. That's the only reason I'd pick it.

Short Film (Live Action)
