Oscar Live-Blog - Third Hour

Here we go with the third and hopefully final hour of the show.

10:41 - More awkward and  The last two songs.

10:42 - Florence!!  Brilliant artist.

10:44 - Followed by...Gwyneth.

10:46 - Toy Story grabs the Original Song.

10:52 - Were we expecting Celine to make an appearence?

10:53 - This is the most shocking part of the show here.  Sad to see just how many greats we've lost in a year.

10:56 - Halle Berry, what Oscar Curse.

11:00 - Umm, Anne, Wonder Woman has already been cast.  What's with that dress?

11:01 - Hilary Swank, what Oscar Curse x 2?

11:02 - So Swank is here to announce someone else.  Director Award already?  Isn't it a wee bit early.

11:03 - Whaaaat? King's Speech for best director with Tom Hooper.  Wow indeed, Tom.

11:06 - The Lifetime awards can't even be shown live.  Wow.  Slap in the face to the greats of this field.

11:07 - That sir is one amazing bow tie.  Frances rules!

11:11 - Jeff Bridges enters, we've only got three left people  We're almost there.  How can't Portman win this one.  Seriously.  There we go.  A stunning performance.

11:20 - Sandra Bullock here for the guys award.  Please don't take almost 8 minutes like Jeff did.

11:25 - She only took 5 minutes and like predicted, it goes to Firth.

11:33 - Last award of the night, let's see what they picked as the movie of the year.

11:35 - While the King's Speech speech was fitting for the montage, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see it win it all.  Kind of took the suspense out of it for me.

11:36 - The King's Speech win's it all.

That's all for another year.  I hope this year we get the same quality of movies.

Oscar Live-Blog - Second Hour

9:29 - Reese looks stunning, as always.  Has she aged since Cruel Intentions?  Seriously?

9:31 - Supporting Actor is up, holy Batman's beard, Batman.  Some great performances in this category this year.  On a side note, I'm really digging the envelope this year.  LOL!!

9:32 - Bale wins, no surprise there.  Bale's accent blows my mind every time he wins an award.  Nice joke by Bale to the audio clip that released a few year's back where he lost his mind and must have dropped the F-Bomb a few dozen times.  Wow, Batman is tearing up.

9:39 - Let's celebrate ABC! Um, what?

9:40 - Another history lesson, thanks Australia.  Thanks George Lucas!  I haven't watch E.T. in years, I really need to sit down and watch it soon.  Thanks Oscars for the reminder.

9:42 - Original Score, fingers crossed for Trent Reznor! YES!!!  How many of us thought all those years ago when listening to the Downward Spiral screaming Fuck You Like an Animal would have thought that guy one day would be an Oscar Winner?

9:45 - Is James Franco looking at his lines when he looks up like that?  Or is he just trying to remember.  He's driving me nuts with that, I'm sure I'm not alone on that.

9:46 - Scarlett and Matthew, that's two pretty people if I say so myself.  Sound Mixing:  Another one for Inception.  I have to wonder if Inception will win more awards than anything else, but just not the big ones.

9:48 And let's get that other sound award out of the way.  Sound Editing.  Yet another for Inception.

9:54 - One of Oscars biggest blunders, Maresi Tomei, what's she doing lately?  I do remember The Fighter from last year, or the year before.  But since then?  Oh, she's hosting the Techincal Awards.  James Franco and I just shared a thought.  I said congrats Nerds 10 seconds before he did.  Too funny.

9:55 - Yes, Lord of the Rings mention.  Way to go Cate.  Make up goes to the Wolfman.

9:58 - Costume Design goes to Alice in Wonderland.   Did this movie come out in January 2010?  It seems soooo long ago now.

10:02 - Hey Kevin Spacey, you need to do another Usual Suspects type of movie.  Ugg, I can't believe we're still doing the song performances.  Welcome to killing the flow of the show.

10:05 - Woah, wait a minute, are they doing all the songs at once?

10:06 - Is that Chuck?  He can sing??

10:12 - Love the shout out to Oscar Pools!  Documentary Short Subject, Strangers No More.  Sorry, your movie is a stranger to me.   I know of no way of watching those movies in this area.

10:14 - Live Action Short Film, God of Love.  Oh, thank you.  Lesson Learned, I-Tunes, we can see these movies on I-Tunes.

10:16 - Love the Auto Tune of movies!!

10:19 - Oprah!!

10:20 - Best Documentary, Inside Job.  Come on, they should have given it to Banksy.

10:23 - Just got mentioned by @BizInBurlington for the first hour live blog.  That's awesome.

10:24 - I took a two hour nap this afternoon trying to prepare this event and I'm fading fast here.  Pick it up Oscars.

10:27 - And here we have a former host that did a much better job than the current two.  He got the standing ovation because I think the audience wants him to take over.

10:29 - Is Billy trying to give the current hosts some advice here?

10:31 - ya, Jude, get out of Downey's way...

10:32 - Best Visual Effects goes to Inception, how many is that now, you'd really think I'd know at this point.

10:34 - From what I can tally, the number is 4 for Inception.

10:34 - Film Editing, The Social Network.  No Doubt.  If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about.  The flow of this movie is incredible.  Winding the storylines the way they did and it flowed so well.  Great job.

Let's end this hour here.  See ya on the next page.

Oscar Live-Blog - First Hour

Here we go, hosted this year by two of Hollywood's youngest and brightest stars in Hathaway and Franco.  I am excited mostly to see what the often wacky Franco brings to the table.  I hope they play up the fact he truly is the hardest working man in Hollywood.  About a month ago in Entertainment Weekly they posted his schedule and it was nuts.  The man lives on like 3 hours sleep a night.

8:30 - Great opening montage, what a great year in film.  Some amazing flicks this year.

8:32 - The Hathaway/Franco trip through the year's best was hilarious.  Hathaway can really pull off the Boston accent quite well.  "Loved You Tron" !!! HAHAHAA How awesome is Baldwin.  You just got Inceptioned!  LOVE IT!

8:36 - Back to the Future clip!!!  WHAAAAAAAAT!!!  Highlight of the night so far, yes I know it's only six minutes in, but still.

8:39 - Franco looks a wee bit nervous or is it just me? or is he just high?

8:40 - This is dragging out a wee bit, it's starting to get a bit awkward.  Let's start handing out some awards already.

8:41 - Where was the dad in Toy Story?  Thinks that make you go hmmmm.

8:42 - History lessons while we watch the show? Let's not kill the flow of the show.

8:43 - Art Direction is up first, um, don't they normally start with the best supporting actress award?  Alice in Wonderland gets it, doesn't it seem like that movie came out like atleast two years ago?  Mental note, look up and see what Tim Burton is doing.

8:46 - Cinematogrophy, here we go with Inception's first award.  Considering the big show down is between The Social Network and The King's Speech, I made a tonne of picks for Inception.

8:51 - Wow, Kirk Douglas.  Good for him to be out there.

8:53 - Supporting Actress, let's see if all the previous award shows predicted it right.  Holy crap, I totally see Conan O' Brian's sister in The Fighter.  That's hilarious.  Kirk Douglas still has an amazing sense of humor!  Melissa Leo!!  Simply amazing in the role.

8:59 - It would appear that we aren't on ANY sort of tape delay!  Classic!

9:02 - JT is Banksy, it's so obvious!

9:03 - Rumor has it that Franco has shared his stash with EVERYONE at the Oscars this year.

9:04 - Animated Short is up, The Lost Thing.

9:05 - I've just noticed something, I don't have a drink or any snacks.  That's how exciting this speech is.  Time to fill it up.

9:06 - Ah crap, we're jumping right into another award.  Toy Story 3.  Not really a surprise there.  Ok, let's get a drink and some snacks.  I'll be right back blog.

9:09 - Just in case you were curious, Throwback Pepsi and Smartfood - Salty and Sweet version.  I didn't even know Smartfood was doing a Kettle Corn.  Bless you Smartfood, bless you.

9:13 - Holy crap, I need to turn down the brightness on my tv.  Damn those suits are BRIGHT!  Screenwriters are up with Adapted:  Yes!  The Social Network!  Great Book.  I really suggest you read it.  Sorkin delivers a great speech!

9:16 - Original Screenplay, here we go:  The King's Speech!  I'm stunned. Sets the battle up even further between it and Social Network.

9:23 - And we're back.  This isn't Doogie Howser or Hugh Jackman I'll tell ya.

9:24 - So next year, can we have Alec Baldwin back?

9:25 - It's almost an hour and we finally got a Sheen joke in there.

9:26 - Brand and Mirren, what a couple of presentators.  Brand is much funnier here than he was on SNL a few weeks back.

9:28 - Best Foriegn Film, A Better World.

Going to end this hour here.  See you next hour.

What's Playing in my Media Room:
The Oscars and The Amazing Race.

Happy Oscars Day!

It's finally here, the biggest awards show of the year and the most hyped. Much like the Super Bowl, the award show rarely deliveres the hype that it promises. But year after year, I'm on the couch in my media room watching. How can't I? It truly is the best movies of the year. Going to be a great show with Franco and Hathaway hosting this year. Got a few things still to watch before the show starts at 8:30. So let's get right into it.

Actor in a Leading Role
Javier Bardem in “Biutiful”
Jeff Bridges in “True Grit”
Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network”
Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”
James Franco in “127 Hours”

Thoughts from The Media Room: The only thing I haven't watched here is Bardem in Biutiful so I can't comment on his performance. Bridges, Eisenberg and Franco would more than likely win any other year. All of their performances where fantastic. But Firth makes The King's Speech, without him, the movie would be nowhere near as good, he makes the movie.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
John Hawkes in “Winter's Bone”
Jeremy Renner in “The Town”
Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”
Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech”

Thoughts from The Media Room: Bale was Dicky Eklund, a fantastic performance.

Actress in a Leading Role
Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”
Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”
Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter's Bone”
Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”
Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine”

Thoughts from The Media Room: What a weird category for me, The Kids Are All Right gets so much hype and I don`t get it. I didn`t think it was that great. Nicole Kidman can be great in things and while I haven't watched Rabbit Hole, she always seems to be Nicole Kidman in a movie. Jennifer Lawrence was very, very good in Winter's Bone, same with Willaims in what I thought was an awful movie in Blue Valentine. But this is Portman's to lose at this point.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams in “The Fighter”
Helena Bonham Carter in “The King's Speech”
Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”
Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

Thoughts from The Media Room: The more I think about Melissa Leo in The Fighter, the more I love the performance. If I couldn't give it to Leo, I'd have to give it to Steinfeld. What a performance.

Animated Feature Film
“How to Train Your Dragon” Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
“The Illusionist” Sylvain Chomet
“Toy Story 3” Lee Unkrich

Thoughts from The Media Room: Um? Where's Dispicable Me? #snub Is this even fair to the other two movies?

Art Direction
“Alice in Wonderland” Production Design: Robert Stromberg; Set Decoration: Karen O'Hara
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” Production Design: Stuart Craig; Set Decoration: Stephenie McMillan
“Inception” Production Design: Guy Hendrix Dyas; Set Decoration: Larry Dias and Doug Mowat
“The King's Speech” Production Design: Eve Stewart; Set Decoration: Judy Farr
“True Grit” Production Design: Jess Gonchor; Set Decoration: Nancy Haigh

Cinematography
“Black Swan” Matthew Libatique
“Inception” Wally Pfister
“The King's Speech” Danny Cohen
“The Social Network” Jeff Cronenweth
“True Grit” Roger Deakins

Thoughts from The Media Room: A stunning movie to watch.

Costume Design
“Alice in Wonderland” Colleen Atwood
“I Am Love” Antonella Cannarozzi
“The King's Speech” Jenny Beavan
“The Tempest” Sandy Powell
“True Grit” Mary Zophres

Thoughts from The Media Room: I always like to give this award to period pieces as they seem to have the most complex costumes and would have to do the most work to put the costumes together.

Directing
“Black Swan” Darren Aronofsky
“The Fighter” David O. Russell
“The King's Speech” Tom Hooper
“The Social Network” David Fincher
“True Grit” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen

Thoughts from The Media Room: Like woah, major #snub. A little movie called Inception and its director Nolan? Wow. Gotta go with Fincher then.

Documentary (Feature)
“Exit through the Gift Shop” Banksy and Jaimie D'Cruz
“Gasland” Josh Fox and Trish Adlesic
“Inside Job” Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
“Restrepo” Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger
“Waste Land” Lucy Walker and Angus Aynsley

Thoughts from The Media Room: The only one I've watched, a strange f'in movie. Plus I really want to see "Banksy" go up there and get his award. I'm watching a few of the other films this afternoon.

Documentary (Short Subject)
“Killing in the Name” Nominees to be determined
“Poster Girl” Nominees to be determined
“Strangers No More” Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon
“Sun Come Up” Jennifer Redfearn and Tim Metzger
“The Warriors of Qiugang” Ruby Yang and Thomas Lennon

Thoughts from The Media Room: Not going to lie, that's a total guess.

Film Editing
“Black Swan” Andrew Weisblum
“The Fighter” Pamela Martin
“The King's Speech” Tariq Anwar
“127 Hours” Jon Harris
“The Social Network” Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter

Thoughts from The Media Room: I've said it before, I LOVE the flow of this movie, to interweave those storylines with the court cases and never lose steam, wonderful.

Foreign Language Film
“Biutiful” Mexico
“Dogtooth” Greece
“In a Better World” Denmark
“Incendies” Canada
“Outside the Law (Hors-la-loi)” Algeria

Thoughts from The Media Room: Picked it for the Globe and it won, so I'm going with it again.

Makeup
“Barney's Version” Adrien Morot
“The Way Back” Edouard F. Henriques, Gregory Funk and Yolanda Toussieng
“The Wolfman” Rick Baker and Dave Elsey

Thoughts from The Media Room: How could this not win? They created the Wolfman?

Music (Original Score)
“How to Train Your Dragon” John Powell
“Inception” Hans Zimmer
“The King's Speech” Alexandre Desplat
“127 Hours” A.R. Rahman
“The Social Network” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

Thoughts from The Media Room: YES!

Music (Original Song)
“Coming Home” from “Country Strong” Music and Lyric by Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey
“I See the Light” from “Tangled” Music by Alan Menken Lyric by Glenn Slater
“If I Rise” from “127 Hours” Music by A.R. Rahman Lyric by Dido and Rollo Armstrong
“We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3 Music and Lyric by Randy Newman

Thoughts from The Media Room: I hope this is the song near the end of the movie when the helicopter arrives, that scene almost brought me to tears, not going to lie. A beautiful cinematic moment.

Best Picture
“Black Swan” Mike Medavoy, Brian Oliver and Scott Franklin, Producers
“The Fighter” David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Mark Wahlberg, Producers
“Inception” Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, Producers

“Toy Story 3” Darla K. Anderson, Producer
“True Grit” Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, Producers
“Winter's Bone Anne Rosellini and Alix Madigan-Yorkin, Producers

Thoughts from The Media Room: The best I've seen this year, no movie had an impact on me like The Social Network.

Short Film (Animated)
“Day & Night” Teddy Newton
“The Gruffalo” Jakob Schuh and Max Lang
“Let's Pollute” Geefwee Boedoe
“The Lost Thing” Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann
“Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, a Journey Diary)” Bastien Dubois

Thoughts from The Media Room: Seems like an odd title. That's the only reason I'd pick it.

Short Film (Live Action)
“The Confession” Tanel Toom
“The Crush” Michael Creagh
“God of Love” Luke Matheny
“Na Wewe” Ivan Goldschmidt
“Wish 143” Ian Barnes and Samantha Waite

“True Grit” Skip Lievsay and Craig Berkey
“Unstoppable” Mark P. Stoeckinger

Thoughts from The Media Room: Gotta go with this, I read somewhere about the sound you heard when the van is falling is the same sound from another part of the movie slowed waaaaaay down. Genius.

Radiohead - The King Of Limbs

I’ve listened to the new Radiohead album twice now, it’s incredibly haunting, especially when just sitting back and enjoying it with your eyes closed. Sadly, it’s a bit too much like In Rainbows and doesn’t bring anything new to the table. I was hoping for more. Should have come out in 2008 and then it would have felt like Kid A and Amnesiac back in 2000/2001. Still a solid album and would highly recommend to a Radiohead fan, just felt a little part twoish three years too late.

Hoping this 8 track album is just to get us to another new album in 2012 that takes Radiohead to the next level.
