What's playing in the media room - November 30th 2010

I'm back as I posted the other day, let's get right back on that bike and see what's playing tonight. Not sure how much new stuff I'll be watching as I'm a week behind on EVERYTHING. *cry*

Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas - 8:00 - ABC

A classic, no further details required.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer - 8:00 - CBS

Another classic, but, ummm, people know it's still only November right?

Christmas in Rockefeller Center - 8:00 - NBC

I'm sensing a theme here? COME ON!

Glee - 8:00 - Fox - Season 2 Episode 13

Episode Title: Special Education

New Directions heads to sectionals against fierce competition including Hipsters and Dalton Academy's Warblers who shine with their newest members: Kurt. Meanwhile, romantic troubles begin for couples Emma and Carl as well as Finn and Rachel.

I haven't watched last week, but what's this about Kurt? Can't say I'm shocked about the Emma storyline, we all knew that Stamos wasn't going to join on full-time.

One Tree Hill - 8:00 - The CW - Season 8 Episode 10

Episode Title: Lists, Plans

Brooke and Julian go skydiving, while Haley sets up a concert at Tric featuring Kid Cudi (Appearing as himself) Meanwhile Quinn revisits her past when she sneaks out of town to visit a familiar face.

Shrek The Halls - 8:30 - ABC

I wonder if this will be a classic in 30 years like Rudolph, The Grinch and Frosty are today?

No Ordinary Family - 9:00 - ABC - Season 1 Episode 9

Episode Title: No Ordinary Anniversary

Jim and Stephanie celebrate their anniversary and end up fighting crime together for the first time when a super-powered individual with the ability to project flames goes on a rampage.

Yes, finally they're starting to become the crime fighting family we all want them to be.

The Biggest Loser - 9:00 Two Hours - NBC - Season 10 Episode 12

Raising Hope - 9:00 - Fox - Season 1 Episode 10

Episode Title: Burt Rocks

Realizing that his father had to give up his dream of becoming a rock star to take care of his family, Jimmy decides to give Burt a change at reliving his rock days with help from Burt's music idol Smokey Floyd.

I'm pretty sure this is the episode that Jason Lee guest stars in. I'm surprised it took them this long to bring in a former Earl star as Hope is done by the makers of Earl.

Life Unexpected - 9:00 - The CW - Season 2 Episode 10

Episode Title: Thanks Ungiven

Several big secrets come out when Baze hosts Thanksgiving dinner at his loft. Baze fears that his father, Jack, will find out that he's dating his boss, Emma; Lux is concerned that her parents will find out that she's dating Eric; Tasha worries that a dark secret from her recent past will be discovered; and Cate worries that telling Ryan the truth would further complicate their strained marriage.

Running Wilde - 9:30 - Fox - Season 1 Episode 6

Episode Title: Mental Flaws

Emmy agrees to go with Steve to a charity balls where she intends to teach him a lesson about valuing women for more than their physical beauty.

I was stunned to see this back on the air, I figured it would have been cancelled by this point. It's a fairly weak hour, so maybe it'll do a bit better then previous airings.

Detroit 1-8-7 - 10:00 - ABC - Season 1 Episode 9

Episode Title: Home Invasion/Drive By

Longford, Mahajan, Stone and Sanchez are involved in the investigation of a retired auto industry executive who was found dead in his spacious Boston-Edison home. Multiple motives arise including robbery and jealousy over a possible affair between the widow and an old friend from the Detroit Yacht Club. Fitch, Washington and Lt. Mason must deal with the drive-by shooting of an 11-year old boy. Much to the surprise of the detectives, it's discovered that the same gun killed both victims.

One of the best new shows on television and that's just not me saying so, everyone that I talk to love this one. Catch up on it if you can.

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show - 10:00 - CBS

Episode Title: A Night of a Thousand Fantasies

I think we all know what this is about.

Sons of Anarchy - 10:00 - FX Network - Season 3 Episode 13

Episode Title: NS

Both the ATF and the Russians prove obstacles as the club looks to heal old wounds. Hell's Angels vet Sonny Barger has a cameo as a prisoner.

90 minute special finale for this one kids!

LIke I said, fairly quiet night on the box as what ever isn't listed here is a repeat or isn't on. If I was watching live, it'd be: Glee, No Ordinary Family, Raising Hope, Detroit 187 and the Sons. But instead I'm on catch up duty.

What will you be watching tonight?

Back from Banff...

I've been in Banff for the last week and what a stunning place.  I would really love to move there, as long as I can get a fast enough Internet Connection and a job that pays me what I get paid now.  Is that too much to ask?  I think not.

I was able to glance at some of my regular sites during the week to keep loosely up to date.  But nowhere near as much I regularly like to do.  New schedules have been announced, the Oscar hosts have been announced, The Whole Truth returns to television this week from what I can tell.  But sadly it would appear that the dreaded repeat has started up up full swing.  There was hardly anything on for me tonight and while I only returned at dinner time tonight having no tv too watch is a good thing, I've got a lot to watch from last week.  But enough about me, what's every other tv viewer out there doing with this now available time?  My available time tonight has gone to unpacking, trying to update my Ipad to the new software version, of which somehow it's taken nearly two hours to backup the thing and I've only got 5 gigs used.  It's an essential tool for any nerd to have.  Which reminds me, I really do need to put that Twitter post together on who you should be following if you every sign up for Twitter.  So much info flies by, it's wonderful.

Just wanted to pop on here and say hello and that Posts will return to a regular pace starting hopefully tomorrow, all depending on how much work email is waiting for me.  I'm guessing, 550 emails.  Ugh.

A look into NBC's new Winter lineup and my thoughts...

So NBC is shuffling the schedule around a bit and after looking at it, I'm not sure it's much better. Let's face it, the network is in trouble. They're getting slaughtered most nights and I see why they felt they needed to do something, other than Thursday nights I'm really not sure how this is better. They've decided to bounce around shows throughout the winter season and say things like, will air in this time-slot for 2 weeks and then on to their regular spot. I'm no network planner/scheduler but moving around shows like that can't be a good thing, way to keep a show in place so fans know when they're on.

Enough chatter, let's jump in and see what they've got in store for us. Hold on to your hats, this gets a wee bit complicated.

MONDAYS

8 pm – Chuck
9 pm – The Cape will premiere with a two-hour episode on Sunday, January 9 (9-11 p.m.). New episodes start in its regular time period on January 17 (9-10 p.m.)
10 pm – Harry's Law (beginning January 17)
9 pm – The Event (returns on February 28, 9-11 p.m.; resumes in its regular time slot March 7)
10-11 p.m. — Parenthood (debuts in this slot March 7 with all new episodes)

My Take: This is only Monday but do you see what I'm saying, bounces all over the place. We're going to need calendars to keep track of this. I don't watch Chuck but I like the geek loved Chuck leading into the Superhero/Comic Book show like The Cape, that seems to work. I've watched the preview for The Cape and it doesn't appeal to me at all, Vinnie Jones what are you doing man? And NBC; you canceled Heroes last year and you come back with The Cape this year. Umm, what? You can watch the preview for The Cape after this and make you're own decision. Harry's Law is yet another Lawyer show and this time it's based on some misfit lawyers. Hey NBC, The Whole Truth and Outlaw have already been canceled and The Defenders is rumored to not be getting a second season. So why bring us ANOTHER friggin lawyer show. The upside here is that it's written by tv mastermind David E. Kelley (Chicago HOpe, Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Public, Boston Legal). The cast in this I will admit looks pretty strong and everyone knows that Kelley can write. I'm just not sure how yet another lawyer show will be recieved. Enjoy the preview! I'll be watching the 10 pm hour early in the season and by the time The Event returns I may be done with it, I'm not liking the Flashforward like treatment this show is getting and I don't see it ending well for it. We may never know how it'll end. SOB!

The preview for The Cape

The preview for Harry's Law

TUESDAYS

8-10 pm — The Biggest Loser: Couples (beginning January 4)
10 pm – Parenthood (beginning January 4 for 4 episodes)
10 pm — Law & Order: Los Angeles (beginning February 8 )

My Take: Yet another edition of Biggest Loser, I've commented on this one before. It doesn't pull the numbers you would think it would for how much NBC is behind it. But it does better then a lot of the other garbage the peacock puts on the air so, it's back again. Parenthood which is a good show that not enough people watch will keep it's normal slot for a month, apparently go off the air for a month because there isn't any mention of it in Feb and then moves to Mondays. You following? Damn. Many people were predicting that L&O:LA would move to another night to move SVU and that's exactly what's happened. SVU needs the 10PM wiggle room so I have to like that move. I'm just not sold on Los Angeles as it's own show. Last weeks wasn't exactly a glam filled LA type story, so I really hope that they aren't getting away from that. They really need to stick to the dirty downtown Los Angeles/Hollywood type stories to keep it interesting. Either way NBC you'll have me watching the 10 pm hour and that's it NBC. If Law & Order doesn't get any better, you just might lose me there as well as Detroit 1-8-7 is a MUCH better option.

WEDNESDAYS

8 pm — Minute to Win It (beginning January 5)
9 pm – Chase (beginning January 12)
10 pm – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (originals beginning January 5 with two-hour episode, 9-11 p.m. ET)
9 pm – America's Next Great Restaurant (beginning March 16)

My Take: Oh NBC, you've really thrown Wednesday night to the wolves here. I don't watch Minute to Win It, in fact, I don't know anyone that does. If you've read this blog before, you know that I Hate Chase and I don't know how it possibly get a full season order. Well folks, I hope you enjoyed Chase because it couldn't compete at 10 pm on a Monday and there is no way it's going to do better against Modern Family/Cougar Town and Criminal Minds. Buh Bye. America's Next Great Restaurant? I spent a weekend in the States a few weeks back and I don't need to re-live the food portion of that trip. I do like the fact that SVU gets a 10 pm slot, but I still won't watch it. SVU is the realest of the L&O's to me and it rattles me too much to watch it.

THURSDAYS (all beginning January 20)

8 pm – Community
8 pm – Perfect Couples
9 pm – The Office
9:30 pm – Parks and Recreation
10 pm – 30 Rock
10:30 pm – Outsourced

My Take: This is really the big part of the story, a three hour comedy block for the first time in a long while. I've ripped on NBC pretty hard on most of this post. But Bravo NBC for having the balls to totally change up things. Will it work, I really hope so. People have been crying for months about getting Parks and Rec back. So it's coming back and I hope people watch it, it's become a much better show then the office. If you watched it The First season and gave up on it. Go back, trust me, yes the first season was awful. Remember the first season of The Office US version, uh ya, pretty awful and it turned out to have a pretty good run. Community has had a few good episodes this season and I hope they return to form. But it really doesn't matter what you put in that 8 pm slot, it'll get destroyed by Big Bang Theory, so might as well keep Community there. It's got an established fan base. I'm very excited to see if 30 Rock changes its comedy up a bit by getting the later timeslot. It took me a long time to find a preview for Perfect Couples and I loved the preview, loved it! The first episode appears to be about games night! Loved that! It's got a view people that you'll recogonize in it. For some reason I can't embed the preview so you'll have to enjoy this link.

FRIDAYS

8 pm — Who Do You Think You Are? (beginning January 21)
9-11 pm – Dateline NBC (beginning January 7)

My Take: The Lisa Kudrow hosted Who Do You Think You Are? Um, celebs going through their family tree really doesn't interest me, at all. Then you've got Dateline. Personally I think the only thing you should be watching on Fridays if you're home watching tv is: Blue Bloods and then working on clearing the pvr. Sorry NBC, you're back to the sucking.

SUNDAYS

7 pm – Dateline NBC
8 pm – The Marriage Ref (beginning March 6)
9-11 pm – The Celebrity Apprentice (beginning March 6)

My Take: Um, ya...So another edition of Dateline, what did you miss in the two hours you had on Friday? Next. The Marriage Ref, you're really only good when you have good guests on. Plus you seem to get the dumbest couples in America, just saying. You line up good guests and I'll pvr it, at best. The ratings from this year indicate that viewers only want to watch The Apprentice when there are celebrities involved, I do use the term "celebrities" loosely. I really, really hope this is the last version of this. It needs to end.

So there it is, what will you be watching?

Random Sunday notes...

As my profile says, I spend a lot of time bouncing around the net reading about shows; always trying to find the next great show.  I heard about a show from the BBC called Luther a few weeks back as it was debuting on BBC America.  I wrote it down in my notebook(yes I make notes about things like this in a notebook) and I didn't give it another thought because; as you know my schedule is already too heavy as it is.  I had planned on coming back to it at a later date when things weren't so hectic.  But as I was browsing Twitter yesterday; I saw an interesting tweet from The Anti Critic. "This has some of the best written dialogue on television (watching Luther S01E01 via @gomiso) http://miso.io/akgOqp "  That's all it took, you tell me that a show has great dialogue and I'm all over it.  I grabbed the first season and we powered through the whole thing, this is something that I'll have to pick up on DVD's once they come to Canada and according to Amazon, the release date is March 8th 2011.  I recommend this show to anyone and everyone!  The dialogue is brilliant and the pacing of the show is fabulous.  We literally couldn't stop watching the season, my wife was screaming at the television during the last episode.  BBC usually does bring the drama very well, especially the crime drama.  It was an intense show that never really stops.  It stars the great Idris Elba from The Wire who is a fantastic actor who is finally starting to get some good work, he's also currently guest starring on The Big C right now, another show that you should watch.  Anyways, he stars as a Senior Detective in London who's so into cleaning up the streets that it basically ruins his personal life.  He builds a very fascinating relationship with the first cases suspect that lasts the entire season, to the point she's the only person he can really talk to.  I don't want to divulge too much, but this is a show people need to watch if you want to see a well written and well acted, a highly unpredictable cop drama that will have you on the edge of your seat while watching it.

I love television more then most and really more then I should.  But after watching such a clever and well-written show, you truly see just how awful regular network television is.  It just seems so dumbed down and so repetitive.  It's really no wonder that most people have the attitude that there is nothing on television.  You just aren't watching the right shows or right channels.  I'm always on Twitter, browsing the websites for HBO, AMC, FX reading about the shows they'vee got on, their old shows, shows they've got in development.  Because they're producing far superior television.  Look at the Emmy's the last few years, most of the nominated series' aren't network television, they're mostly from the Cable Channels and there is a reason from that.  Network television really does need to improve.

Speaking of AMC, holy crap The Walking Dead premiere was awesome and I can't wait for tonight's episode.  Does Sunday night television stress anyone else out?  The Amazing Race, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Eastbound and Down, Bored To Death,  The Walking Dead.  Rubicon and Mad Men just ended.  My god do all the best shows have to air in one night?  Pace it out a bit, please, for the sanity of our pvr's.

My top 5 new shows on television this season.

5) The Whole Truth

Yes it's been canceled already, but that can't mean I didn't enjoy it.  Sure it's just another legal procedural, but I really liked the two leads and I really enjoyed how they played out against each other.  The way that we got to see both sides of the case prepare to do court battle was quite neat.  Sad it got canned so early.

4) Blue Bloods

How can you not like Tom Selleck?  Another New York cop show, but with a twist.  The story lines are a bit different than the usual cop show and that's a bit refreshing.  But what I really like are those family dinners where the family discusses their sides to the legal system.  The only reason that this is so far down the list is because they keep teasing us with this conspiracy with the family, but we never really see enough of it to sink our teeth in.

3) Hawaii Five-0

I will admit that this show was way down on my radar when the fall season started up.  In fact, i fully expected to watch the pilot and never watch another episode.  Boy was I wrong.  Five-0 is a fun fun cop show with a beautiful back drop.  The stories are a bit different much like in Bloods and the chemistry between the two leads gets better every week.  They're truly turned into an old married couple and that does bring more fun to the show.  Just like in Bloods, we've got a bit of a conspiracy going on with McGarret's father and his sister taking photo's of his stuff, what was with that?  He was there initially to investigate what the mystery was with the contents of his dad's toolbox, but I really don't feel that we get enough of that.

2) Detroit 187

If you would have asked me on October 30th, "Ant, what's your favorite new show?" The answer hands down would have been, "Detroit 1-8-7, hands down" This show is fantastic, I'm loving the Detroit back drop, the chemistry between the groupings of Detectives is fantastic.  You truly would have thought that this group has been working together for years.  Michael Imperioli's Detective Louis Fitch is one of the most quirky and intelligent characters on television.  The October 21st episode Lost Child/Murder 101 was one of the saddest hours on television, it showed the Law is the Law, but sometimes the Law isn't always right.  If you didn't at least tear up during that episode, there is something wrong with you.

1) The Walking Dead

Just one episode in and I can tell you already, without a doubt the best new thing I've seen on television this season is The Walking Dead.  Some people didn't like the gore sure, but I don't know a person that truly didn't like it.  It felt like I was watching a movie and I can't see what the following five weeks brings us.  As much as I like Dexter, he's taken a back seat to the Zombies for now.

What are your favorite new fall shows?

I gladly welcome back Banks as she's hilarious addition to the show, I've wondered how long they'd go before bringing in this type of story line.  Finale episode of the series will have to end with Jack and Liz in bed, screen fades to black.

Grey's Anatomy - 9:00 - ABC - Season 7 Episode 7

Mostly a night of comedies for me tonight, Big Bang, Community, 30 Rock, CSI and The Office.  I'm seriously hoping to clear off some of my backlog.  My tracking sheet is getting out of control.

A look into next Summer's movie lineup...

A few sites today were posting an article from Iron Man director Jon Favreau about how next summer is going to be a bloodbath as so many great movies are scheduled to come out. So I decided to take a quick lookie look and god damn there is a tonne of great stuff coming out next year.

May 6th 2011:
Thor
A comic book adaptation, directed by Kenneth Branagh and the cast is looking pretty fantastical at this point. Not liking what I've seen of the images from this one so far. Until I see a trailer I really can't comment on this one with confidence.

May 20th 2011:
Pirates of The Carribean: On Stranger Tides
Surprise it's going to be in 3D! Ian McShane from Deadwood will be starring as Blackbeard so I'm pumped to see that, but the last two left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. For some reason I've got excitement for this one. Interestingly it's being directed by the guy that did Nine and Memoirs of a Geisha.

May 26th 2011:
The Hangover Part II
Who isn't excited for this one? Anyone? Due Date is just going to tide me over to until this comes out.

Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom
I haven't seen the original but from what I hear the first one is a good one and the kiddies love it, I'm sure those with young ones will be visiting the theatre in May.

June 3rd 2011:
X-Men:First Class
Another comic book movie, they really seem to be getting a bit popular these days. Umm, ya, X-Men, I'm there. Plus this cast looks insane! Rose Byrne from Damages, January Jones from Mad Men, James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt. Some serious talent there.

June 10th 2011:
Fast and Furious 5
I really enjoyed the first one and after that, not so much. I haven't seen the fourth one yet, but I don't hear good things.

Super 8
Another super secret J.J. Abrams project, no one really knows anything about it, this time we have some cast info, Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler are the only two names that jump out at me. Steven Spielberg is involved in this somehow, I just don't know how. Check out the trailer.

June 17th 2011:
Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds suits up for this comic adaptation, hmmm, another one. Weird. I enjoy the Lantern comics, but this seems brutally mis-cast. They're rushing on making this a trilogy from the footage the studio has watched. That's great, hey Ryan forget this and start working on a real version of Deadpool already! This is either going to be totally awesome or just painfully awful. Kinda like Wolverine. I was reading on a site today and they were talking about how Blake Lively is up for a couple of major roles in upcoming films against some serious competition, I never would have guessed coming from Gossip Girl that she'd get into movies so quickly.  Plus good movies. She was pretty good in The Town; the 7 minutes she was in it. I mention this because Lively is in the movie.

June 24th 2011:
Cars 2
I dare you to find someone that didn't like the first one, that is all. Holy crap, the first one will be 5 years old by the time this one comes out. Damn time flies, seems like just the other day every store was filled with Cars merch.

Rise Of The Apes
A prequel to the Apes story, the cast on this one looks awesome. James Franco, Freida Pinto, Tom Felton, John Lithgow, Brian Cox and Andy Serkis. This is the description from IMDB: An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Uh, fighting apes? I'm there.

July 1st 2011:
Transformers: Dark Of The Moon
The best one yet Shia promises, uhhh better be. The last one was shit. Show me giant robots fighting for two hours. That's all we need man!

July 8th 2011:
Zookeeper
A Zookeeper trying to find love, animals voiced by Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Jon Favreau, Judd Apatow, Cher and possibly Ken Jeong, Rosario Dawson, Donnie Wahlberg, Leslie Bibb and Joe Rogan.

July 15th 2011:
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows:Part Two
Bring the kleenix, a lot of people will be crying when this one is over. Mostly Warner Brothers.

Winnie The Pooh
Optimus Prime is voicing Eeyore! Damn, he's had a busy summer.

July 22nd 2011:
Captain America:The First Avenger
I wasn't sure when I read that they cast Chris Evans as Cap, but the stills so far look damn good and I can't wait to actually see a trailer for this one.

July 29th 2011:
Cowboys and Aliens
There are only a few things you need to know about this one, written by Damon Lindelof of Lost, directed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau and it stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Oliva Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Clancy Brown (Lost and Carnivale), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Keith Carradine (Agent Lundy from Dexter) and Adam Beach.

Ok, at this point August isn't looking too great, but still; I'll be exhausted by the end of July.

August 3rd 2011:
The Smurfs

August 12th 2011:
30 Minutes or Less

August 19th 2011:
Fright Night
Conan
Spy Kids 4:Armageddon

August 26th 2011:
Final Destination 5

I was very, very disappointed by this summer's lineup so I'm hopeful that next summer is going to be awesome.  Can't wait for some of these trailers to drop, when they do I'll post them on here.

What's playing in the Media Room - November 2nd 2010

Last night was great and it had nothing to do with the nights actual shows. Caught up again on some Bored to Death and Eastbound & Down, finally watched me some The Walking Dead and watched Monday's How I Met Your Mother. Holy crap that was boring.

Ratings Watch from Last Night:

Strong night for the CBS comedies, averaging almost 10.5 between the four. Dancing with the Stars cracked the 20 million mark at 9 pm. Ugh, this show is never going away. Wouldn't it be sad if a show like the Bachelor or Dancing with the Stars set some sort of record for being the longest running tv show. *Shivers* The Women of SNL special bombed pretty hard with only 5.19 million. Finally Castle had a great night to lead the 10 pm hour with 11.80 million viewers.

But let's move on and take a look at the fine viewing that are on tonight. Ugh.

Life Unexpected - 9:00 - The CW - Season 2 Episode 7

Episode Title: Camp Grounded

Lux goes on a school camping trip, and Cate, Baze, Ryan and Math all volunteer to be chaperones. Expect a lot of plaid wearing and that nothing will go according to plan.

Sons Of Anarchy - 10:00 - FX Network - Season 3 Episode 9

Episode Title: Turas

Still in Ireland; the club embarks on a protection run, the likes of which they've never seen before.

And that's it! Thank god I say, it'll allow me to catch up on things. Can Sundays get any busier? Yikes. I've got so much catching up to do, in fact it's scary. I've got a bunch from Sunday to watch, a couple things from Monday. Plus some shows I'm several weeks behind that need catching up. If only someone would pay me to watch television, check twitter and facebook, I'd be set. The only thing on tonight for me is Sons of Anarchy.

My thoughts on The Walking Dead premiere episode...

Well, finally after all my chatter and hype I finally watched it.  I found it chilling, a bit slow, but very chilling and somewhat sad.

Let me get the slow part out of the way.  I've read the entire The Walking Dead series so far and for the most part, I'm on the edge of my seat while reading it and can't stop until the graphic novel is complete.  Then I wait months eagerly anticipating the next release.  The story is quite intense and very much a page turner.  This first episode I found a bit slow at times, although I had hyped it up in my own mind and I can see why someone who isn't familiar with the source material would find it boring.  Relax people, it's the first episode and there are a tonne of great storylines to come.  Just wait till we get to the Prison, that's all I'm going to say about that.  But I found the pace of the episode slow and checked to see how much time was left a couple of times, because I knew how the episode ended and I knew that scene was very intense.  But like I said it's the first episode and we're just getting to know our main character Rick and we're setting up just how huge this zombie apocalypse is.  We're also getting a glimpse into just how lonely these people are.

Darabont directed an episode that made the world feel so empty and the lack of a soundtrack I found haunting, a song might have been played 3 or 4 times in the 75 minutes.  But that was it.   The episode was so quiet, I had to turn it up a few times because I felt I might have been missing something.  But alas, there was nothing to miss, a bird chirping here and there but that's all there was.  No human created noises that we're used to and that was really freaking me out.  It made the world feel so large and so empty all at the same time. It made me feel for Rick as it truly showed just how alone he was and the few shots of the military camps that had been destroyed showed me just how much trouble the human race was in.  If the Army couldn't protect us, what hope do we have to survive this outbreak.  How is this one man going to find his wife and son?   And if he does find them, then what?  The back and forth shots of Rick with the zombie in the park and Morgan battling with shooting his wife was just so heartbreaking, part of you wonders if there is any way to fix this.  But really; you know these aren't the people they were before they were infected.  Humans truly pushed to their breaking point, one that can't push his guilt aside and one still trying to do something very human, put someone out of their suffering and misery.

I thought the scenes when Rick first opens the door at the hospital to the outside and when he fires in the tank were fantastical.  Both times it really messed with my senses and really pulls you in to the situation that Rick is facing.

For the most part I was on the edge of my seat, but not because it was a wild ride but because I wanted to take it all in.  It all felt so very real and I almost felt ill by how empty the world had become.  The books are great as I said, but the tv series so far made it feel so much more real.  It made me feel things that I didn't get in the early issues of the comic.  You might see a panel in the book that shows downtown Atlanta all destroyed, but you can't really feel what that means until you see it live and in color.  Like I first said, haunting.

Back to that final scene before I close it out for the night, holy crap.  For the first 70 minutes it's a human versus zombie one on one and you really don't feel the threat.  Sure you see destroyed buildings everywhere they go, sure you see all the bodies at the hospital.  But you really can't feel the danger and how all these happened.  You know things were real bad when this was all going down, but until that last scene, you've really got no idea what it was like.  We've really got no idea how vicious these things are and what it's like to be truly hunted by The Walking Dead.

That's the thing that truly makes The Walking Dead great, while it takes place during a zombie outbreak, the story isn't really about the zombies at all.  It's about the survivors and their story to find safety and what they'll do to find it.  How they've all changed since the outbreak, what the outbreak has done to them and the tolls it takes on them.  While we did barely touch on the other group of survivors, I didn't like what we saw.  I can't believe they showed us what was going on with his former partner.  They hint at that near the end of the first book, but after what I saw tonight we've got a long way to go to the end of that first book.  I thought it was too early to tell that secret and the way they build on it in the books is much, much better.  You get to see the first glimpses how this has really twisted people up inside.

I must say, the casted director really deserves a bonus, the casting of the few people that we actually did see was bang on.

Can't wait to see what Darabont has in store for us next week.

What's Playing in the Media Room - November 1st 2010

I don't know about you but I had a great weekend, caught up on so much stuff.  Caught up on Dexter, that was a bit slow, still have last night's to watch.  Bored to Death, just brilliant, that's the only way I can describe that show.  Mad Men has been finished, Sons has been caught up, can't you just feel the tension in the Belfast air?  Ohhhh Tuesday is going to be so good.  Terriers you've been caught up as well, this should really doesn't get enough press or webspace as it's one of the better one's out there this season.  The Big C, I left you for a while, but powered through last night.  Another solid show.  Weeds, you're getting sillier by the week and I love it, I missed you being so silly.  Like I said, a very productive weekend on the catchup front.  Plus the PVR got cleared.  Blue Bloods anyone?  Hello, loving it.  After re-reading what I've written, if I watch it, I love it.  LOL!  Except for Community, did anyone catch that?  Did anyone actually like that Halloween episode? Baah, I thought it was awful.  Maybe it was just me.

Let's dive into what's on tonight, as for the ratings last night, everything was down.  It's being tied to some great football games, the World Series and the fact it was Halloween.  But, back to tonight.
