Thoughts from the Media Room: Whitney

So I took a bit of a break from work this morning and watched the pilot episode of Whitney. In checking out the first promo I really wanted to watch this, then I saw an extended promo and my excitement dropped a bit. Then I started to read the early reviews from the bloggers and critics and my excitement was crushed. One reviewer called it the worst new show on television.

Premise: The series follows the titular character, an opinionated woman and her very supportive live-in boyfriend. Even though the two have decided that they will not commit to marriage, she does question how committed they are in their 3-year relationship and tries to go as far to prove a point; she begins to fear what she sees as "relationship boredom" and worries what will happen next that could possibly end her relationship. Because of what she sees and hears around her involving other relationships, she decides to use unconventional methods to keep the romantic flames glowing with the help of her close friends.

Right off, I will say I did laugh a few times during the episode. But overall the episode wasn't that great, I wouldn't say it's the worst thing this season. I think that title will fall to H8R and How to be a Gentleman. The chemistry between Whitney and Alex, I thought was actually quite good and I believed the situation they were in, unlike other shows I've watched recently. I thought all the secondary characters were highly annoying to the point I just wanted them to go away and I didn't think they really added anything to the show.

Considering Whitney Cummings is a standup comedian, I thought her delivery of some of her lines was actually quite rough at times. I wondered if she was feeling totally comfortable acting. Jerry Seinfeld was the worst actor in his show, so this really isn't too big of a surprise in seeing a standup struggle acting.

Cummings actually is the writer and producer of two shows this fall, Whitney and 2 Broke Girls. Out of the two I think at this point i'd much rather watch 2 Broke Girls. The pools have already started to place your bets when Whitney will get cancelled by NBC so it's not looking good. I'd give this one a pass.
