My Thoughts on the Fall TV Season. So far.
So, September is over and by my count we’ve had the chance to watch 15 new shows so far into the fall season. I would like to make some notes on what we’ve seen so far.
Let’s start with Monday nights.
Partners:
Within about 5 minutes I was totally put off by this, I found the stereotypes, the situations and the plot overly predictable. Judging by the ratings, doesn’t look like I’ll be alone in my decision on this one. Let’s see how it does tonight. Never would have guessed that this one is from the creators of Will and Grace. Do yourself a favor, find syndicated episodes of Will and Grace and watch that instead. This brings nothing new to the table? Was Jack not available?
Media Room Status: Dropped from my playlist.
The Mob Doctor:
I want to like this one, I really do. I love the idea of this show. Unfortunately that’s where my love ends. I find this show to be horribly mis-cast, no matter how hard I try I just can’t see the two leads as actual doctors.
Media Room Status: I’m giving this one more viewing and I like Fox might be dropping it.
Revolution:
Another one I really want to like, but I don’t know where they found some of these actors, but they’re horrible. I saw the “big twist” coming at the end of last week’s episode, I just didn’t guess she’d be working for him. This show has the potential to be super cool and is out there for people like me. Read Geeks. But every week I sit there and just get so frustrated I’m just not sure how long I’ll be able to take it.
Media Room Status: It’s getting a pvr spot. For now.
On to Tuesday:
Ben and Kate:
I found this to be quite funny, I thought even during the pilot episode that the cast had gelled quite nicely. I was entertained and for me, as long as I’m entertained, I’ll watch. It didn’t grab me like say, New Girl or 2 Broke Girls did last year. But still funny none the less.
Media Room Status: Tuesday’s are a light night for us, so it keeps a spot on the pvr.
Go On:
Horrible. Someone needs to tell Matthew Perry that Friends ended 8 years ago now. Jesus, it ended 8 years ago. Wow. But anyways, Friends is over. Find a new character and act like someone other than Chandler. To be honest, I couldn’t even tell you how this pilot ended as I kind of zoned out after about 20 minutes already.
Media Room Status: Dropped.
The New Normal:
I enjoyed the first episode, it had me hooked until I watched the second episode. I then found the whole thing loud and in my face. Mr. Murphy, we’ve already got one Sue Sylvester, we don’t need another one. And NeNe, why do you keep hiring her? Seriously.
Media Room Status: Dropped after the second episode.
The Mindy Project:
Everywhere I go and read about Mindy Kaling people are always raving about her. So I tried going in with an open mind, because, frankly. I hated her character on The Office, I found it so one dimensional. This was better than I expected and now that I'm thinking about it, it is almost 30 Rock lite. I'll give it another episode or two before making my final call on it. If you're schedule is light and you're looking for some laughs, give it a go.
Media Room Status: I’ll give it a couple more episodes before I make my final decision on this one.
Vegas:
Loved it, a cast that is fully loaded and there should be lots of action. I'm glad to see a Network that can give us something other that a lawyer show or a hospital show. It's a bit silly at times, but the good far outweighs the bad.
Media Room Status: Full Season Order for me please.
Wednesday:
Animal Practice:
I LOVED this one, it had me in stitches from the moment go until the credits finally rolled. Great cast with a great mix of characters. The plots should be endless here. I'm sure they've watched an episode or two of Children's Hospital when putting this one together.
Media Room Status: Full Season Order for me please.
Guys With Kids:
I enjoyed it, but yes like any sitcom with 4-6 25-35 year olds. It will remind you of another sitcom that you’ve seen before on NBC that used to air on Thursday nights. It really doesn't bring anything to the table, but I've laughed every episode so I've been entertained.
Media Room Status: That being said, I'll watch this week to week and won't feel the need to watch "every" episode.
The Neighbors:
7 Minutes. It took 7 minutes for me to declare on my Facebook page that I don’t know how this made it to air. Holy shit this is horrible. Agents, Studio Heads, Production Company staff, writers, producers all NEED to be fired for this load of garbage.
Media Room Status: I think you can guess that is a no go from me.
Thursday:
Last Resort:
I really enjoyed this but in the back of my head I couldn’t help worry that this quite easily could turn from what it should be to an easy way out and become horrible. The thing that hooked me and I’m guessing what hooked those that watched it is the mystery of what the Government is doing. What’s the conspiracy man? If this turns into them living life on the island see ya later mister.
Media Room Status: Here's hoping we've got a season worth of good stuff here. Not sure where it could go for a second season. But I'm still in with a back out clause if needed.
Elementary:
Much better than I expected. I loved the quickness of the editing, the screen cuts and the dialog that matches Miller's speed.
Media Room Status: Call me in.
Friday:
Made in Jersey:
I watched this and there was something about it that just bothered me. I wonder how many cases can we go back to Jersey and relate something of her home life into the case that she's working on that week. I'm sure that's the first question the Studio asked. But we'll see. I really enjoyed the legal stuff, the Jersey stuff, not so much. At this point, hasn't the world seen enough New Jersey for a while?
Media Room Status: Week to Week at this point. Maybe. Friday is catch up day and this might have to get scrapped.
Sunday:
666 Park Avenue:
So someone said, "hey, that show American Horror Story is pretty good. Can we get that on Network Television?" That's how this one was born. Not as scary as story, but it has serious potential if they can ramp it up a bit. I'm intrigued where they're going with it. It's got John Locke and that's a good thing.
Media Room Status: I'm signing a lease for a season.
So those are my brief thoughts on the new shows that I saw. What did you watch? What are you keeping or pitching already? What do you think the first cancelled show will be?
What about returning shows that I watched? I'm just going to group those into 3 categories. Loved it, it's okay and Hated it.
Loved It:
Sons of Anarchy - Awesome start
Glee - Not loved it, but not it's okay either. Better than last season.
Sharktank.
Parks and Recreation.
Castle - Wrapped up the 4 year story way too quick.
Person of Interest.
Dexter - GREAT START.
Revenge.
It's okay:
The X-Factor - I've had opposite feelings on the judges than what I thought I would.
Survivor.
The Office.
New Girl - Loved the first episode, wasn't a fan of the second.
Criminal Minds.
CSI - Last season? Please?
Big Bang Theory - You can do better than that.
Survivor.
The Amazing Race - Is there going to be any team to hate this year?
Hated It:
How I Met Your Mother - COME ON ALREADY!
2 Broke Girls - Same problem you had last year, inconsistent.
Modern Family.
*I'm hoping to watch Homeland and start Boardwalk Empire tonight. Then start watching tonight's shows. *gulp*
In October we’re looking at another 7 Series Premieres so weeding through the good from the bad isn’t quite over yet. We’ve also got another 20 Season Premieres, yikes.
