Modern Family could have been a VERY different show...

So I just stumbled across this picture while cruising around my favorite internet hot spots. You can click on the picture for a bigger and better view and see who the producers had in mind for some key roles in one of this sites favorite comedies.

Yes, that's right. Coach and Parenthood star Craig T. Nelson as Jay. Wow, the comedy would have been totally different. One of the best parts of Modern Family is when Jay comes down hard on someone and acts like the mean Al Bundy type we know and love him for. Then he turns to the camera and cracks a smile letting us in on the joke. Or at the end of an episode were he's giving an "interview" and he tells the nicest story, telling us that this old guy is just a softy. I really couldn't have believe Nelson could have pulled that off. He is much better suited to the character he's playing in Parenthood. That could have been close.

Lisa Kudrow as Claire? Woah. That could have been brutal and I'd say that if Kudrow was in the role the show might not have gotten a second season. Yes I feel that strongly about her. She was great as Phoebe, but I'm not really sure she could have pulled off the mean parent role that current Claire Julie Bowen brings to the table and brings well to the table.

Finally they were looking at Andy Richter as Mitchell. WHAT? They also were looking at Terry Hale as Cameron. I can't find anything on Terry on IMDB. But just by looking at the picture, the dynamic would be VERY VERY different. I would argue that Cam and Mitchell are the best couple on the show. The chemistry between Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet is incredible and they're usually the highlight of the show.

Now that I've typed all that up, I'm very confident that we wouldn't be looking at a second season of Modern Family. I don't know what brought on the changes, but lucky for us the changes were made.
